Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

那夜王睡不着覺，吩咐人取歷史書，就是史籍，念給他聽，

尼布甲尼撒在位第二年，他做了很多夢，心裏煩亂，不能睡覺。

你使我不能閉眼；我心煩亂，甚至不能說話。

大衛為這孩子懇求上帝。大衛刻苦禁食，到裏面去，躺在地上過夜。他家中的老臣來到他旁邊，要把他從地上扶起來，他卻不肯，也不同他們吃飯。

我為自己積蓄金銀，搜集各君王、各省份的財寶；又為自己得男女歌手和世人所喜愛的物，以及一個又一個的妃嬪。

在一排柳樹中，我們掛上我們的豎琴。

彈琴、歌唱、吹笛、吹號的聲音，在你中間絕對聽不見了；各行手藝的技工在你中間絕對見不到了；推磨的聲音在你中間絕對聽不見了；

擊鼓之樂停止，狂歡者的喧嘩止住，彈琴之樂也停止了。人不再飲酒唱歌，喝烈酒的，必以為苦。

約拿就照耶和華的話起來，到尼尼微去。尼尼微是一座極大的城，約有三天的路程。約拿進城，走了一天，宣告說：「再過四十天，尼尼微要傾覆了！」尼尼微人就信服上帝，宣告禁食，從最大的到最小的都穿上麻衣。這消息傳到尼尼微王那裏，他就從寶座起來，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在灰中。他叫人通告尼尼微全城，說：「王和大臣有令，人、畜、牛、羊都不可嘗任何東西，不可吃，也不可喝水。人與牲畜都要披上麻布，切切求告上帝。各人要回轉離開惡道，離棄自己掌中的殘暴。誰知道上帝也許會回心轉意，不發烈怒，使我們不致滅亡。」

掃羅的孫子米非波設也下去迎接王。他自從王離開的那一日，直到王平安回耶路撒冷的日子，沒有修腳，沒有剃鬍鬚，也沒有洗衣服。

他們隨着琴鼓歌唱，因簫聲歡喜。

亞哈聽見這些話，就撕裂衣服，禁食，貼身穿着麻布，也睡在麻布上，沮喪地走來走去。

「那些躺臥在象牙床上，舒身在榻上的，吃羣中的羔羊和棚裏的牛犢。他們以琴瑟逍遙歌唱，為自己作曲，像大衛一樣；以大碗喝酒，用上等油抹身，卻不為約瑟所受的苦難憂傷；
