Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

你使我不能合眼；我烦乱不安，甚至不能说话。

我又为自己积聚金银，还有来自君王们和各省的珍宝。我也为自己招纳了男女歌手，以及许多的妃嫔，都是世人引以为乐的。

在那里的柳树林中，我们挂起我们的竖琴；

弹琴的、奏乐的、吹笛的、吹号之人的声音，在你中间绝不会再听到了！各种手艺的工匠，在你中间绝不会再找到了！磨石的声音，在你中间绝不会再听到了！

欢快的鼓声止息，欢腾者的喧嚷停止，欢快的琴声也止息了。他们不再喝酒唱歌；烈酒对饮者也变得苦涩。

约拿照着耶和华的话就起身，到尼尼微去。尼尼微是一座超级大城，走遍它需要三天的路程。约拿开始进入那城，走了一天的路程，宣告说：“再过四十天，尼尼微就要覆灭了。”尼尼微人就相信神，并宣告禁食，无论尊贵的或卑微的，都披上麻布。这话语传到尼尼微王的时候，他从自己的宝座上起来，从身上脱下王袍，披上麻布，坐在灰烬中。然后他颁布谕令，说：“在尼尼微，王和大臣有令：‘无论人或牲畜，牛或羊，都不可尝什么，不可吃什么，也不可喝水。人和牲畜都当披上麻布；各人都当迫切地向神呼求，从自己邪恶的道路上、自己手里的残暴中转回。或许神会转回、施怜悯，从他猛烈的怒气中转回，使我们不致灭亡。’”
