Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

那一夜，王睡不著覺，就吩咐人把史記，就是年鑒拿來，在王面前誦讀。

尼布甲尼撒在位第二年，他作了夢，因此心裡煩亂，不能入睡。

你使我不能合眼，我煩躁不安，連話也說不出來。

大衛為那孩子懇求神，並且禁食。他進房裡去，終夜躺在地上。他家中的老侍從站在他旁邊，要把他從地上扶起來，他卻不肯，也不與他們一起吃飯。

彈琴、奏樂、吹笛、吹號的聲音，在你中間決不能再聽到了！各樣手藝技工，在你中間決不能再找到了！推磨的聲音，在你中間決不能再聽到了！

擊鼓的喜樂止息，宴樂者的喧嘩停止，彈琴的喜樂也止息了。他們不得再飲酒唱歌；喝濃酒的，必覺苦味。

約拿就動身，照耶和華的話往尼尼微去了，這尼尼微是一座極大的城（“是一座極大的城”或譯：“在神面前是一座大城”），要三天才能走完。約拿進城，走了一天，就宣告說：“再過四十天，尼尼微就要毀滅了。”尼尼微人信了（“信了”或譯：“信服”）神，就宣告禁食，從大到小，都穿上麻衣。這事傳到尼尼微王那裡，他就起來，離開寶座，脫去王袍，披上麻衣，坐在爐灰中。他又傳諭全尼尼微，說：“王和大臣有令：‘人、畜、牛、羊，都不准嘗甚麼，不准吃，也不准喝。不論人畜，都要披上麻衣；各人要懇切呼求神，悔改，離開惡行，摒棄手中的強暴。或者神回心轉意，不發烈怒，使我們不致滅亡。’”

掃羅的孫子米非波設也下去迎接王。他自從王出走那天，直到王平平安安回來的日子，都沒有修腳，沒有刮鬍子，也沒有洗衣服。

他們跟著琴鼓高歌，又因著簫的聲音歡樂。

亞哈聽見這些話，就撕裂自己的衣服，披上麻布，禁食，睡在麻布上，並且神色頹喪地行走。

你們臥在象牙床上，躺在榻上；你們吃羊群中的羊羔，和牛棚裡的牛犢。你們閒逸地彈琴奏樂，又為自己製造樂器，像大衛一樣。你們用大碗喝酒，用最貴重的膏油抹身；但你們並沒有為約瑟的敗落而痛心。
