那一夜，王睡不着觉，就吩咐人把史记，就是年鉴拿来，在王面前诵读。

弹琴、奏乐、吹笛、吹号的声音，在你中间决不能再听到了！各样手艺技工，在你中间决不能再找到了！推磨的声音，在你中间决不能再听到了！

击鼓的喜乐止息，宴乐者的喧哗停止，弹琴的喜乐也止息了。他们不得再饮酒唱歌；喝浓酒的，必觉苦味。

约拿就动身，照耶和华的话往尼尼微去了，这尼尼微是一座极大的城（“是一座极大的城”或译：“在神面前是一座大城”），要三天才能走完。约拿进城，走了一天，就宣告说：“再过四十天，尼尼微就要毁灭了。”尼尼微人信了（“信了”或译：“信服”）神，就宣告禁食，从大到小，都穿上麻衣。这事传到尼尼微王那里，他就起来，离开宝座，脱去王袍，披上麻衣，坐在炉灰中。他又传谕全尼尼微，说：“王和大臣有令：‘人、畜、牛、羊，都不准尝什么，不准吃，也不准喝。不论人畜，都要披上麻衣；各人要恳切呼求神，悔改，离开恶行，摒弃手中的强暴。或者神回心转意，不发烈怒，使我们不致灭亡。’”

扫罗的孙子米非波设也下去迎接王。他自从王出走那天，直到王平平安安回来的日子，都没有修脚，没有刮胡子，也没有洗衣服。

他们跟着琴鼓高歌，又因着箫的声音欢乐。

亚哈听见这些话，就撕裂自己的衣服，披上麻布，禁食，睡在麻布上，并且神色颓丧地行走。

你们卧在象牙床上，躺在榻上；你们吃羊群中的羊羔，和牛棚里的牛犊。你们闲逸地弹琴奏乐，又为自己制造乐器，像大卫一样。你们用大碗喝酒，用最贵重的膏油抹身；但你们并没有为约瑟的败落而痛心。
