Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

那夜王睡不着觉，就吩咐人拿史书念给他听。

欢快的鼓声止息，悦耳的琴音消失，宴乐的喧闹不复听闻。再没有人对酒高歌，浓酒变得苦涩。

约拿便照耶和华的吩咐前往尼尼微城。尼尼微城很大，要三天才能走遍。约拿进城走了一天，宣告说：“再过四十天尼尼微就要毁灭了！”尼尼微城的人相信了上帝的话，便宣告禁食，所有的人，无论大小贵贱都换上麻衣。尼尼微王听到这消息后，便走下宝座，脱下王袍，披上麻衣，坐在炉灰中。王又向全城颁布命令，说：“王和大臣有令，所有的人都必须禁食，牛羊牲畜都不许吃草也不许喝水。人和牲畜都必须披上麻衣，众人要向上帝恳切呼求，改邪归正，停止作恶。上帝或许会施怜悯，收回烈怒，使我们不致灭亡，也未可知。”

扫罗的孙子米非波设也来迎接王。从王离开那天，直到大卫平安回来之日，他没有修过脚，没有剃过胡子，也没有洗过衣服。

他们伴着铃鼓和竖琴歌唱，在笛声中欢喜不已。

亚哈听了以利亚的话，就撕裂衣服，披麻禁食，睡觉也不脱下麻衣，垂头丧气地走来走去。

你们躺在象牙床上，靠在卧榻上，你们吃养在圈里的肥嫩牛羊。你们伴着琴声唱慵懒的歌，像大卫一样为自己制造乐器。你们以大碗狂饮，用上等膏油抹身，却漠不关心约瑟家的衰亡。
