When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.

猶太人回答說：「我們有律法，按照那律法，祂應當被處死，因為祂自稱是上帝的兒子。」彼拉多聽了這話，更加害怕，連忙將耶穌帶回總督府，問祂：「你到底是從哪裡來的？」但耶穌沒有回答。彼拉多說：「你不回答我嗎？難道你不知道我有權釋放你，也有權把你釘在十字架上嗎？」耶穌回答說：「除非從上面賜下權柄給你，否則你無權處置我。因此，把我交給你的那個人罪更大。」從那時起，彼拉多想要釋放耶穌，可是猶太人卻一直喊叫：「如果你釋放這個人，你就不是凱撒的忠臣。凡自以為王的，就是背叛凱撒。」

尼布甲尼撒王勃然大怒，下令將沙得拉、米煞、亞伯尼歌帶來。於是他們被帶到王面前。

百姓聚在一起的時候，彼拉多就問他們：「你們要我給你們釋放誰？巴拉巴還是被稱為基督的耶穌？」因為彼拉多知道他們把耶穌抓來是因為嫉妒。彼拉多正坐堂斷案時，他夫人派人來對他說：「你不要插手這個義人的事！我今天在夢中因為這個人受了許多苦。」祭司長和長老卻慫恿百姓要求釋放巴拉巴，處死耶穌。總督再次問百姓：「這兩個人，你們要我釋放哪一個？」他們說：「巴拉巴！」彼拉多問：「那麼，我怎樣處置那個被稱為基督的耶穌呢？」他們齊聲說：「把祂釘在十字架上！」彼拉多問：「為什麼？祂犯了什麼罪？」他們卻更大聲地喊叫：「把祂釘在十字架上！」彼拉多見再說也無濟於事，反而會引起騷亂，於是拿了一盆水來，在眾人面前洗手，說：「流這義人的血，罪不在我，你們自己負責。」

彼拉多召來祭司長、官長和百姓，對他們說：「你們帶這個人來，指控祂煽動百姓造反，我當著你們的面審問了祂，卻查不出祂有任何你們指控祂的罪。希律也查不出祂有什麼罪，所以把祂送回來了。可見，這人並沒有犯什麼該死的罪。因此，我要懲戒祂，然後釋放祂。」
