但以理在王面前回答說：「王所問的那奧祕的事，沒有智慧人、占卜者、術士或算命者能講明給王。

於是術士、占卜者、迦勒底人和算命者都來了；我就向他們說了這夢，他們卻不能把這夢的釋義顯明給我。

到了早晨，法老靈裡煩亂，就派人召來了埃及所有的術士和智慧人。法老向他們講述了他的夢，但沒有人能為法老解夢。

喪子和寡居這兩件事必在一日之內突然臨到你！你的法術再多，符咒再有威力，這兩件事也必全然臨到你！

現在智慧人和占卜者都被帶到我面前，為要他們讀出這文字，並把它的釋義顯明給我，但他們卻不能講明這句話的釋義；

堅持施行你的符咒和眾多法術吧！那些都是你從年輕時辛勞所得的，或許你能得益處，或許還能讓人恐懼呢！你因謀劃過多而筋疲力盡；現在就讓那些劃分天象、觀看星辰、在新月時說預言的都站出來吧，拯救你脫離那些將要臨到你的事！看哪！他們必像麥稭一樣被火燒毀，他們不能解救自己脫離威猛的火焰；這不是可以用來取暖的炭火，也不是可以坐在其面前的爐火。那些與你一起辛勞的，就是從你年輕時就與你一起做買賣的，對你也是如此；他們各奔己路，四處飄流，沒有人拯救你。」
