他們因窮乏與飢餓而消瘦，在黑夜荒廢與荒涼之地咀嚼曠野的乾草；他們在草叢中採摘鹹草，以羅騰樹根作食物。他們從人群中被趕出去，人追喊他們如追喊賊一樣，以致他們住在驚嚇谷之中，在地洞和巖穴之間；他們在草叢中間喊叫，在雜草之下集合起來。他們都是愚頑人、下流人的子孫，被人鞭打逐出境外。

他被趕逐，離開人群，他的心變如獸心，他和野驢同住，像牛一樣吃草，身體被天露滴濕；等到他承認至高的神在世人的國中掌權，他喜歡誰，就立誰執掌國權。伯沙撒啊！你是他的子孫，你雖然知道這一切，你的心仍不謙卑，竟高抬自己，敵對天上的主，使人把他殿中的器皿拿到你面前來，你和你的大臣、妻妾、妃嬪用這些器皿喝酒；你又讚美那些不能看見、不能聽見、甚麼都不能知道，用金、銀、銅、鐵、木、石所做的神，卻沒有把榮耀歸給那手中有你的氣息，和那掌管你一切命途的神。因此，有手從神那裡伸出來，寫了這文字。“所寫的文字是：‘彌尼，彌尼，提客勒，烏法珥新。’這文字的意思是這樣：‘彌尼’就是神已數算了你國度的年日，使國終止；‘提客勒’就是你被稱在天平上，顯出你的缺欠；‘毘勒斯’（“毘勒斯”即“烏法珥新”的單數式）就是你的國要分裂，歸給瑪代人和波斯人。”於是伯沙撒下令，人就把紫袍給但以理穿上，把金鍊戴在他的頸上，又宣告他在國中掌權，位列第三。當夜，迦勒底人的王伯沙撒被殺。瑪代人大利烏奪取了迦勒底國；那時他六十二歲。（本節在《馬索拉文本》為6:1）

那人經常住在墳墓中間，從來沒有人能綁住他，甚至用鎖鍊都不能。曾經有很多次，人用腳鐐和鎖鍊捆綁他，鎖鍊卻被他掙斷，腳鐐也被他弄碎，始終沒有人能制伏他。

而是由神來決定；他使這人降卑，使那人升高。

你必被趕逐，離開人群，和野地的走獸同住；你必像牛一樣吃草，要經過七年的時期；等到你承認至高者在世人的國中掌權，他喜歡把國賜給誰，就賜給誰。”這話立刻就應驗在尼布甲尼撒身上；他被趕逐，離開人群，像牛一樣吃草，身體被天露滴濕，直到他的頭髮長得像鷹毛，指甲像鳥爪。“七年的日子滿了，我尼布甲尼撒舉目望天，我的理智恢復過來，我就稱頌至高者，讚美尊崇活到永遠的神。他的統治永無窮盡，他的國度直到萬代。地上所有的居民，在他來說都是虛無；在天上的萬軍中，他憑自己的意旨行事；在地上的居民中，也是這樣；沒有人能攔住他的手，或問他說：‘你作甚麼？’
