大聲吩咐將巫師、迦勒底人和觀兆的領進來。王對巴比倫的智慧人說：「誰能讀這文字，並且向我講解它的意思，他必身穿紫袍，項帶金鏈，在我國中位列第三。」

於是王使但以理高升，賞賜他極多的禮物，派他管理巴比倫全省，又立他為總理，掌管巴比倫所有的智慧人。

於是伯沙撒下令，人就把紫袍給但以理穿上，把金鏈給他戴在頸項上，又傳令使他在國中位列第三。

摩押的長老和米甸的長老手裏拿着占卜的禮金到巴蘭那裏，將巴勒的話告訴他。

我聽說你能講解，能解疑惑；現在你若能讀這文字，為我講解它的意思，就必身穿紫袍，項戴金鏈，在我國中位列第三。」但以理回答王說：「你的禮物可以歸你自己，你的賞賜可以歸給別人；我卻要為王讀這文字，講解它的意思。

巴勒對巴蘭說：「我不是急切地派人到你那裏去召你嗎？你為何不到我這裏來呢？我豈不能使你得尊榮嗎？」

如今你趕快回本地去吧！我想使你大得尊榮，看哪，耶和華卻阻止你得尊榮。」

我必使你得極大的尊榮，無論你向我要甚麼，我都給你。只求你來為我詛咒這百姓。』」
