於是，伯沙撒下令給但以理穿上紫袍，戴上金項鏈，又宣告他在國中位居第三。

摩押和米甸的長老們帶著占卜的禮金去見巴蘭，把巴勒的話轉告他。

我聽說你能釋夢、解惑。你若能讀出牆上的字，把意思告訴我，你必身穿紫袍、頸戴金鏈，在我的國中位居第三。」但以理回答說：「你的禮物自己留著，你的賞賜可以給別人，不過我會為你讀這些字，解釋意思。

巴勒對巴蘭說：「上次派人請你，你為何不肯來？難道我不能給你重賞嗎？」

現在快回家去吧！我說過要給你重賞，但耶和華不讓你得到。」

他必有重賞。你要什麼都可以，只求你去為他咒詛那民族。」
