When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact.

我看见日光之下有一种智慧，对我来说意义深远。有一个势力强大的君王来攻击一个人口不多的小城，他建造营垒围困这城。这城里有一个贫穷的智者，他用智慧拯救了这城，但事后人们却把他遗忘了。我认为智慧胜过武力，然而那位穷人的智慧却被轻视，他所说的话也无人理会。智者的细语胜过官长在愚人中的喊叫。智慧胜过兵器，但一个罪人却能破坏许多善事。

护卫长尼布撒拉旦把城中的余民以及投降的人都掳到巴比伦，

他率领的迦勒底的军队拆毁了耶路撒冷四围的城墙。

于是，但以理去见王指派处死巴比伦智者的亚略，对他说：“不要处死巴比伦的智者，请带我去见王，我要为王解梦。”

有一个聪明的妇人从城上喊：“请听我说！请听我说！请约押到这边来，我有话要对他说。”约押就走上前去，那妇人问道：“你是约押吗？”约押答道：“我就是。”妇人说：“请听婢女说几句。”约押说：“你说吧！”妇人说：“古时候人们常说，‘有事到亚比拉去请教，问题都会解决。’我们这座城的人在以色列素来热爱和平、忠心耿耿，你却要毁灭这座大城。你为什么要吞掉耶和华的产业？”约押答道：“我根本不想吞掉或毁灭这城。以法莲山区比基利的儿子示巴背叛大卫王，你们只要把他交出来，我就撤退。”那妇人说：“我们一定把他的首级从城上抛下来给你。”妇人把自己的良策告诉众人，他们便把比基利的儿子示巴的头割下来，抛给约押。约押就吹响号角令军队各自回家，自己回耶路撒冷见王。
