The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it,

Surely every man walks about like a shadow; Surely they busy themselves in vain; He heaps up riches, And does not know who will gather them.

Then I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them:“ Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.

“ Thus you shall say to him,‘ Thus says the Lord:“ Behold, what I have built I will break down, and what I have planted I will pluck up, that is, this whole land.

That the triumphing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the hypocrite is but for a moment?Though his haughtiness mounts up to the heavens, And his head reaches to the clouds,Yet he will perish forever like his own refuse; Those who have seen him will say,‘ Where is he?’

I have seen the wicked in great power, And spreading himself like a native green tree.Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more; Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found.

“ After this I looked, and there was another, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird. The beast also had four heads, and dominion was given to it.

And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the Brook Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, shall be holy to the Lord. It shall not be plucked up or thrown down anymore forever.”

There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, Nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks,“ For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?” This also is vanity and a grave misfortune.

Those who trust in their wealth And boast in the multitude of their riches,None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him—For the redemption of their souls is costly, And it shall cease forever—That he should continue to live eternally, And not see the Pit.For he sees wise men die; Likewise the fool and the senseless person perish, And leave their wealth to others.Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever, Their dwelling places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.Nevertheless man, though in honor, does not remain; He is like the beasts that perish.

Until I went into the sanctuary of God; Then I understood their end.Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction.Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors.As a dream when one awakes, So, Lord, when You awake, You shall despise their image.
