So I hated all the fruit of my labor for which I had labored under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the fruit of my labor for which I have labored by acting wisely under the sun. This too is futility.

And knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them,“ Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and no city or house divided against itself will stand.

This is what you are to say to him:‘ This is what the Lord says:“ Behold, what I have built I am going to tear down, and what I have planted I am going to uproot, that is, all the people of the land.”

But God said to him,‘ You fool! This very night your soul is demanded of you; and as for all that you have prepared, who will own it now?’

That the rejoicing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the godless momentary?Though his arrogance reaches the heavens, And his head touches the clouds,He perishes forever like his refuse; Those who have seen him will say,‘ Where is he?’

I have seen a wicked, violent person Spreading himself like a luxuriant tree in its native soil.Then he passed away, and behold, he was no more; I searched for him, but he could not be found.

After this I kept looking, and behold, another one, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird; the beast also had four heads, and dominion was given to it.

And the entire valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the brook Kidron to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, shall be holy to the Lord; it will not be uprooted or overthrown ever again.”

There was a man without a dependent, having neither a son nor a brother, yet there was no end to all his labor. Indeed, his eyes were not satisfied with riches, and he never asked,“ And for whom do I labor and deprive myself of pleasure?” This too is futility, and it is an unhappy task.

Those who trust in their wealth And boast in the abundance of their riches?No one can by any means redeem another Or give God a ransom for him—For the redemption of his soul is priceless, And he should cease imagining forever—That he might live on eternally, That he might not undergo decay.For he sees that even wise people die; The foolish and the stupid alike perish And leave their wealth to others.Their inner thought is that their houses are forever And their dwelling places to all generations; They have named their lands after their own names.But man in his splendor will not endure; He is like the animals that perish.

Until I entered the sanctuary of God; Then I perceived their end.You indeed put them on slippery ground; You dropped them into ruin.How they are destroyed in a moment! They are utterly swept away by sudden terrors!Like a dream when one awakes, Lord, when stirred, You will despise their image.
