He also said to his disciples,“ There was a certain rich man who had a manager. An accusation was made to him that this man was wasting his possessions.He called him, and said to him,‘ What is this that I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’“ The manager said within himself,‘ What will I do, seeing that my lord is taking away the management position from me? I don’t have strength to dig. I am ashamed to beg.I know what I will do, so that when I am removed from management, they may receive me into their houses.’Calling each one of his lord’s debtors to him, he said to the first,‘ How much do you owe to my lord?’He said,‘ A hundred batos of oil.’ He said to him,‘ Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’Then he said to another,‘ How much do you owe?’ He said,‘ A hundred cors of wheat.’ He said to him,‘ Take your bill, and write eighty.’“ His lord commended the dishonest manager because he had done wisely, for the children of this world are, in their own generation, wiser than the children of the light.I tell you, make for yourselves friends by means of unrighteous mammon, so that when you fail, they may receive you into the eternal tents.He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much. He who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.If therefore you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?If you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. You aren’t able to serve God and Mammon.”

“‘ If your brother has grown poor among you, and sells himself to you, you shall not make him to serve as a slave.As a hired servant, and as a temporary resident, he shall be with you; he shall serve with you until the Year of Jubilee.Then he shall go out from you, he and his children with him, and shall return to his own family, and to the possession of his fathers.For they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt. They shall not be sold as slaves.You shall not rule over him with harshness, but shall fear your God.

These will war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings, and those who are with him are called chosen and faithful.”

If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district, don’t marvel at the matter, for one official is eyed by a higher one, and there are officials over them.

You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the foreigners who are in your land within your gates.In his day you shall give him his wages, neither shall the sun go down on it; for he is poor and sets his heart on it; lest he cry against you to Yahweh, and it be sin to you.

But if that evil servant should say in his heart,‘ My lord is delaying his coming,’and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with the drunkards,the lord of that servant will come in a day when he doesn’t expect it, and in an hour when he doesn’t know it,and will cut him in pieces, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. That is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.

Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies.

He has on his garment and on his thigh a name written,“ KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

“‘ You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him.“‘ The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning.

If your brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you.When you let him go free from you, you shall not let him go empty.You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, out of your threshing floor, and out of your wine press. As Yahweh your God has blessed you, you shall give to him.You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God redeemed you. Therefore I command you this thing today.

“ If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me,what then will I do when God rises up? When he visits, what will I answer him?Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him? Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?

that every man should let his male servant, and every man his female servant, who is a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, go free; that no one should make bondservants of them, of a Jew his brother.All the princes and all the people obeyed who had entered into the covenant, that everyone should let his male servant, and everyone his female servant go free, that no one should make bondservants of them any more. They obeyed and let them go;but afterwards they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.Therefore Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,“ Yahweh, the God of Israel, says:‘ I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying,At the end of seven years, every man of you shall release his brother who is a Hebrew, who has been sold to you, and has served you six years. You shall let him go free from you; but your fathers didn’t listen to me, and didn’t incline their ear.You had now turned, and had done that which is right in my eyes, in every man proclaiming liberty to his neighbor. You had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name;but you turned and profaned my name, and every man caused his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom you had let go free at their pleasure, to return. You brought them into subjection, to be to you for servants and for handmaids.’”Therefore Yahweh says:“ You have not listened to me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbor. Behold, I proclaim to you a liberty,” says Yahweh,“ to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine. I will make you be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth.

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children as their children. Behold, we bring our sons and our daughters into bondage to be servants, and some of our daughters have been brought into bondage. It is also not in our power to help it, because other men have our fields and our vineyards.”I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them,“ You exact usury, everyone of his brother.” I held a great assembly against them.I said to them,“ We, after our ability, have redeemed our brothers the Jews that were sold to the nations; and would you even sell your brothers, and should they be sold to us?” Then they held their peace, and found not a word to say.Also I said,“ The thing that you do is not good. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?I likewise, my brothers and my servants, lend them money and grain. Please let us stop this usury.Please restore to them, even today, their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that you are charging them.”Then they said,“ We will restore them, and will require nothing of them. We will do so, even as you say.” Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise.Also I shook out my lap, and said,“ So may God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that doesn’t perform this promise; even may he be shaken out and emptied like this.” All the assembly said,“ Amen,” and praised Yahweh. The people did according to this promise.

I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don’t fear me,” says Yahweh of Armies.

Is this the fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to humble his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under himself? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh?“ Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?Isn’t it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?Then your light will break out as the morning, and your healing will appear quickly; then your righteousness shall go before you, and Yahweh’s glory will be your rear guard.Then you will call, and Yahweh will answer. You will cry for help, and he will say,‘ Here I am.’“ If you take away from among you the yoke, finger pointing, and speaking wickedly;

They make oil within the walls of these men. They tread wine presses, and suffer thirst.From out of the populous city, men groan. The soul of the wounded cries out, yet God doesn’t regard the folly.

“ When he had come back again, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by conducting business.

‘ Why have we fasted,’ they say,‘ and you don’t see? Why have we afflicted our soul, and you don’t notice?’“ Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and oppress all your laborers.

But don’t you be called‘ Rabbi,’ for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.
