buying the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the sweepings with the wheat.

You buy poor people to make slaves out of them. You buy those who are in need for a mere pair of sandals. You even sell the worthless parts of your wheat.

And you mix the grain you sell with chaff swept from the floor. Then you enslave poor people for one piece of silver or a pair of sandals.

This is what the Lord says:“ For three offenses of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they sell the righteous for money, And the needy for a pair of sandals.

‘ Now if a countryman of yours becomes so poor with regard to you that he sells himself to you, you shall not subject him to a slave’s service.He shall be with you as a hired worker, as if he were a foreign resident; he shall serve with you up to the year of jubilee.He shall then leave you, he and his sons with him, and shall go back to his family, so that he may return to the property of his forefathers.For they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they are not to be sold in a slave sale.

And I said to them,“ We, according to our ability, have redeemed our Jewish brothers who were sold to the nations; now would you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us?” Then they were silent and could not find a word to say.

Now there was a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brothers.For there were those who said,“ We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let’s get grain so that we may eat and live.”And there were others who said,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses so that we might get grain because of the famine.”There also were those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards.And now our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our children like their children. Yet behold, we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters are forced into bondage already, and we are helpless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”

They have also cast lots for My people, Traded a boy for a prostitute, And sold a girl for wine so that they may drink.

Hear this, you who trample the needy, to put an end to the humble of the land,
