Hear this! The days are coming— this is the declaration of the Lord God— when I will send a famine through the land: not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.

The boy Samuel served the Lord in Eli’s presence. In those days the word of the Lord was rare and prophetic visions were not widespread.

There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer a prophet. And none of us knows how long this will last.

For many years Israel has been without the true God, without a teaching priest, and without instruction,

He inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him in dreams or by the Urim or by the prophets.

Disaster after disaster will come, and there will be rumor after rumor. Then they will seek a vision from a prophet, but instruction will perish from the priests and counsel from the elders.

Therefore, it will be night for you— without visions; it will grow dark for you— without divination. The sun will set on these prophets, and the daylight will turn black over them.

I will make it a wasteland. It will not be pruned or weeded; thorns and briers will grow up. I will also give orders to the clouds that rain should not fall on it.

“ Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Samuel asked Saul.“ I’m in serious trouble,” replied Saul.“ The Philistines are fighting against me and God has turned away from me. He doesn’t answer me anymore, either through the prophets or in dreams. So I’ve called on you to tell me what I should do.”

The Lord will give you meager bread and water during oppression, but your Teacher will not hide Himself any longer. Your eyes will see your Teacher,and whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you:“ This is the way. Walk in it.”

When He saw the crowds, He felt compassion for them, because they were weary and worn out, like sheep without a shepherd.
