他們一邊喝酒，一邊稱讚那些用金、銀、銅、鐵、木、石所做的神明。那時，忽然有人的手指頭出現，在燈臺對面王宮的粉牆上寫字。王看到那正在寫字的手，王的臉色就變了，他的意念使他惶恐，他的腰骨鬆脫，雙膝彼此相碰。

為此，我的腰滿是疼痛，劇痛抓住了我，好像臨產婦女的劇痛。我惶惑得不能聽，我惶恐得不能看。我的心慌亂，恐怖驚擾著我，我所愛慕的黃昏竟使我恐懼。

婭比蓋回到納巴爾那裡，看哪，他在家裡擺設宴席，像王的宴席一樣。納巴爾心情好，醉得很厲害，所以婭比蓋無論大事小事都沒有告訴他，直到早晨天亮。到了早晨，納巴爾酒醒後，他的妻子把這些事告訴他，他就失去了意識，身體變得硬如石頭。大約過了十天，耶和華擊打納巴爾，他就死了。

押沙龍吩咐他的僕人們說：「你們要注意！當暗嫩喝酒暢快的時候，我對你們說：『擊殺暗嫩！』你們就把他殺了。不要害怕！這不是我吩咐你們的嗎？你們要堅強，作英勇的人！」押沙龍的僕人們就照他所吩咐的向暗嫩行了。王子們都起來，各人騎上騾子逃跑了。他們還在路上，消息就傳到大衛那裡，說：「押沙龍擊殺了所有的王子，沒有剩下一個。」王就起來，撕裂衣服，伏在地上，侍立的臣僕們也都撕裂衣服。
