Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel:“ Amos is raising a conspiracy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words.

Amaziah was priest of Bethel. He sent a message to Jeroboam, the king of Israel. He said,“ Amos is making evil plans against you right here in Israel. The people in the land can’t stand to listen to what he’s saying.

Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent a message to Jeroboam, king of Israel:“ Amos is hatching a plot against you right here on your very doorstep! What he is saying is intolerable.

Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent this message to King Jeroboam of Israel:“ Amos is conspiring against you in the very heart of the kingdom of Israel! The land cannot endure all his prophecies.

Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying,“ Amos has conspired against you in the middle of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words.

Then the officials said to the king,“ Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.”

And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying,“ You shall die!Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying,‘ This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the Lord and took their seat in the entry of the New Gate of the house of the Lord.Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people,“ This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”

He also made temples on high places and appointed priests from among all the people, who were not of the Levites.And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.

In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, began to reign in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years.And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin.

After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Any who would, he ordained to be priests of the high places.

‘ The Lord has made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, to have charge in the house of the Lord over every madman who prophesies, to put him in the stocks and neck irons.Now why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth who is prophesying to you?

Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him.

When he was at the Benjamin Gate, a sentry there named Irijah the son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying,“ You are deserting to the Chaldeans.”And Jeremiah said,“ It is a lie; I am not deserting to the Chaldeans.” But Irijah would not listen to him, and seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.And the officials were enraged at Jeremiah, and they beat him and imprisoned him in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for it had been made a prison.

And they began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”

Now Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer, who was chief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things.Then Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Benjamin Gate of the house of the Lord.The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him,“ The Lord does not call your name Pashhur, but Terror On Every Side.

And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said,“ By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”

For we have found this man a plague, one who stirs up riots among all the Jews throughout the world and is a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.

Then they said,“ Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words.”

saying,“ We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.”

When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him,“ Is it you, you troubler of Israel?”

“ And now you think to withstand the kingdom of the Lord in the hand of the sons of David, because you are a great multitude and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods.Have you not driven out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes for ordination with a young bull or seven rams becomes a priest of what are not gods.

His brothers said to him,“ Are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.
