This is what the Lord says:“ For three offenses of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because he pursued his brother with the sword And stifled his compassion; His anger also tore continually, And he maintained his fury forever.

耶和華曰、以東干罪、至三至四、我不挽回厥罰、以其以刃追襲昆弟、絕無矜憫、發忿傷人不已、怒氣恆懷也、

耶和華又曰、以東犯罪、至三至四、更逐兄弟、擊之以刃、絕無矜憫、挾怨傷人、藏怒不已、故我必罰其罪、

主如是云、以東人犯罪、至三至四、更以刃追弟、棄絕矜憫、永遠發怒、恆忿不已、故我降罰以報之、必不挽回、

This is what the Lord says:“ For three sins of Edom, even for four, I will not relent. Because he pursued his brother with a sword and slaughtered the women of the land, because his anger raged continually and his fury flamed unchecked,

The Lord says,“ The people of Edom have sinned again and again. So I will judge them. They chased Israel with swords that were ready to strike them down. They killed the women of the land. They were angry all the time. Their anger was like a fire that blazed out. It could not be stopped.

Thus says the Lord:“ For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and cast off all pity, and his anger tore perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever.

This is what the Lord says:“ The people of Edom have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They chased down their relatives, the Israelites, with swords, showing them no mercy. In their rage, they slashed them continually and were unrelenting in their anger.

The LORD says: I will not relent from punishing Edom for three crimes, even four, because he pursued his brother with the sword. He stifled his compassion, his anger tore at him continually, and he harbored his rage incessantly.

Thus says the Lord:“ For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because he pursued his brother with the sword, And cast off all pity; His anger tore perpetually, And he kept his wrath forever.

Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Edom, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever.

Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away[ the punishment] thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:

This is what the LORD says:“ Because Edom has committed three crimes– make that four!– I will not revoke my decree of judgment. He chased his brother with a sword; he wiped out his allies. In his anger he tore them apart without stopping to rest; in his fury he relentlessly attacked them.

Yahweh says:“ For three transgressions of Edom, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he pursued his brother with the sword, and cast off all pity, and his anger raged continually, and he kept his wrath forever;

‘ The Lord God says this:“ Because Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred great guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,”therefore this is what the Lord God says:“ I will also reach out with My hand against Edom and eliminate human and animal life from it. And I will turn it into ruins; from Teman even to Dedan they will fall by the sword.And I will inflict My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom in accordance with My anger and My wrath; so they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.

For the Edomites had come again and attacked Judah, and led away captives.

From Kadesh Moses then sent messengers to the king of Edom to say,“ This is what your brother Israel has said:‘ You know all the hardship that has overtaken us;that our fathers went down to Egypt, and we stayed in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians treated us and our fathers badly.But when we cried out to the Lord, He heard our voice and sent an angel, and brought us out from Egypt; now behold, we are at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard; we will not even drink water from a well. We will go along the king’s road, not turning to the right or left, until we pass through your territory.’ ”Edom, however, said to him,“ You shall not pass through us, or I will come out with the sword against you.”Again, the sons of Israel said to him,“ We will go up by the road, and if I and my livestock do drink any of your water, then I will pay its price. Let me only pass through on my feet, nothing more.”But he said,“ You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against him with a heavy force and a strong hand.So Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through his territory; then Israel turned away from him.

Though Edom says,“ We have been beaten down, but we will return and build up the ruins”; this is what the Lord of armies says:“ They may build, but I will tear down; and people will call them the territory of wickedness, and the people with whom the Lord is indignant forever.”

Concerning Edom. This is what the Lord of armies says:“ Is there no longer any wisdom in Teman? Has good advice been lost by the prudent? Has their wisdom decayed?Flee away, turn back, dwell in the depths, You inhabitants of Dedan, For I will bring the disaster of Esau upon him At the time I punish him.If grape pickers came to you, Would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night, They would destroy only what was sufficient for them.But I have stripped Esau bare, I have uncovered his hiding places So that he will not be able to conceal himself; His offspring have been destroyed along with his brothers And his neighbors, and he no longer exists.Leave your orphans behind, I will keep them alive; And let your widows trust in Me.”For this is what the Lord says:“ Behold, those who were not sentenced to drink the cup will certainly drink it, so are you the one who will be held completely blameless? You will not be held blameless, but you will certainly drink it.For I have sworn by Myself,” declares the Lord,“ that Bozrah will become an object of horror, a disgrace, a wasteland, and a curse; and all its cities will become permanent ruins.”I have heard a message from the Lord, And a messenger is being sent among the nations, saying,“ Gather yourselves together and come against her, And rise up for battle!”“ For behold, I have made you small among the nations, Despised among people.As for the terror you cause, The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who live in the clefts of the rock, Who occupy the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as an eagle’s, I will bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.“ Edom will become an object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and will hiss at all its wounds.Like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says the Lord,“ no one will live there, nor will anyone of mankind reside in it.Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thicket of the Jordan to a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will chase him away from it, and I will appoint over it whoever is chosen. For who is like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who can stand against Me?”Therefore hear the plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has in mind against the inhabitants of Teman: they will certainly drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; He will certainly make their pasture desolate because of them.The earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the Red Sea.Behold, He will mount up and swoop like an eagle, and spread out His wings against Bozrah; and the hearts of the warriors of Edom on that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

Remember, Lord, against the sons of Edom The day of Jerusalem, Those who said,“ Lay it bare, lay it bare To its foundation!”

Egypt will become a wasteland, And Edom will become a desolate wilderness, Because of the violence done to the sons of Judah, In whose land they have shed innocent blood.

The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord God says concerning Edom— We have heard a report from the Lord, And a messenger has been sent among the nations saying,“ Arise, and let’s go up against her for battle”—“ Behold, I will make you small among the nations; You are greatly despised.The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, The one who lives in the clefts of the rock, On the height of his dwelling place, Who says in his heart,‘ Who will bring me down to earth?’Though you make your home high like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.“ If thieves came to you, If robbers by night— Oh how you will be ruined!— Would they not steal only until they had enough? If grape pickers came to you, Would they not leave some gleanings?Oh how Esau will be searched, And his hidden treasures searched out!All the people allied with you Will send you to the border, And the people at peace with you Will deceive you and overpower you. They who eat your bread Will set an ambush for you.( There is no understanding in him.)Will I not on that day,” declares the Lord,“ Eliminate wise men from Edom, And understanding from the mountain of Esau?Then your warriors will be filled with terror, Teman, So that everyone will be eliminated from the mountain of Esau by murder.“ Because of violence to your brother Jacob, Shame will cover you, And you will be eliminated forever.On the day that you stood aloof, On the day that strangers carried off his wealth, And foreigners entered his gate And cast lots for Jerusalem— You too were as one of them.Do not gloat over your brother’s day, The day of his misfortune. And do not rejoice over the sons of Judah On the day of their destruction; Yes, do not boast On the day of their distress.Do not enter the gate of My people On the day of their disaster. You indeed, do not gloat over their catastrophe On the day of their disaster. And do not lay a hand on their wealth On the day of their disaster.Do not stand at the crossroads To eliminate their survivors; And do not hand over their refugees On the day of their distress.

Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,“ Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against itand say to it,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, And I will reach out with My hand against you And make you a desolation and a waste.I will turn your cities to ruins, And you will become a desolation. Then you will know that I am the Lord.Since you have had everlasting hostility and have turned over the sons of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their disaster, at the time of the punishment of the end,therefore as I live,” declares the Lord God,“ I will certainly doom you to bloodshed, and bloodshed will pursue you; since you have not hated bloodshed, therefore bloodshed will pursue you.I will make Mount Seir a waste and a desolation and I will eliminate from it one who passes through and returns.I will fill its mountains with its slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines.I will make you a permanent desolation, and your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.“ Since you have said,‘ These two nations and these two lands will be mine, and we will possess them,’ although the Lord was there,therefore as I live,” declares the Lord God,“ I will deal with you according to your anger and according to your envy which you displayed because of your hatred for them; so I will make Myself known among them when I judge you.Then you will know that I, the Lord, have heard all your insults which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel saying,‘ They are desolate; they have been given to us as food.’And you have spoken arrogantly against Me and have multiplied your words against Me; I Myself have heard it.”This is what the Lord God says:“ As all the earth rejoices, I will make you a desolation.As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it was desolate, so I will do to you. You will be a desolation, Mount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then they will know that I am the Lord.” ’

Who is this who comes from Edom, With garments of glowing colors from Bozrah, This One who is majestic in His apparel, Marching in the greatness of His strength?“ It is I, the One who speaks in righteousness, mighty to save.”Why is Your apparel red, And Your garments like one who treads in the wine press?“ I have trodden the wine trough alone, And from the peoples there was no one with Me. I also trod them in My anger And trampled them in My wrath; And their lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments, And I stained all My clothes.For the day of vengeance was in My heart, And My year of redemption has come.I looked, but there was no one to help, And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold; So My own arm brought salvation to Me, And My wrath upheld Me.I trampled down the peoples in My anger And made them drunk with My wrath, And I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”I will make mention of the mercies of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, According to all that the Lord has granted us, And the great goodness toward the house of Israel, Which He has granted them according to His compassion And according to the abundance of His mercies.

Do not be eager in your spirit to be angry, For anger resides in the heart of fools.

and command the people, saying,“ You are going to pass through the territory of your brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So be very careful;do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even as much as a footprint, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.You are to buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you shall also purchase water from them with money so that you may drink.For the Lord your God has blessed you in all that you have done; He has known your wandering through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have not lacked anything.” ’“ So we passed beyond our brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the Arabah road, away from Elath and Ezion geber. And we turned and passed through by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

“ You shall not loathe an Edomite, for he is your brother; you shall not loathe an Egyptian, because you were a stranger in his land.

They make shrewd plans against Your people, And conspire together against Your treasured ones.They have said,“ Come, and let’s wipe them out as a nation, So that the name of Israel will no longer be remembered.”For they have conspired together with one mind; They make a covenant against You:The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites;Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;Assyria also has joined them; They have become a help to the children of Lot. Selah

Who is a God like You, who pardons wrongdoing And passes over a rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.

And by your sword you shall live, And you shall serve your brother; But it shall come about when you become restless, That you will break his yoke from your neck.”So Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said to himself,“ The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

The pronouncement concerning Edom: One keeps calling to me from Seir,“ Watchman, how far gone is the night? Watchman, how far gone is the night?”The watchman says,“ Morning comes but also night. If you would inquire, inquire; Come back again.”

Rejoice and be joyful, daughter of Edom, Who lives in the land of Uz; But the cup will pass to you as well, You will become drunk and expose yourself.The punishment of your wrongdoing has been completed, daughter of Zion; He will no longer exile you. But He will punish your wrongdoing, daughter of Edom; He will expose your sins!

Come near, you nations, to hear; and listen, you peoples! Let the earth and all it contains hear, and the world and all that springs from it.For the Lord’s anger is against all the nations, And His wrath against all their armies. He has utterly destroyed them, He has turned them over to slaughter.So their slain will be thrown out, And their corpses will give off their stench, And the mountains will be drenched with their blood.And all the heavenly lights will wear away, And the sky will be rolled up like a scroll; All its lights will also wither away As a leaf withers from the vine, Or as one withers from the fig tree.For My sword has drunk its fill in heaven; Behold it shall descend for judgment upon Edom, And upon the people whom I have designated for destruction.The sword of the Lord is filled with blood, It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, With the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.Wild oxen will also fall with them And young bulls with strong ones; So their land will be soaked with blood, And their dust become greasy with fat.For the Lord has a day of vengeance, A year of retribution for the cause of Zion.Its streams will be turned into pitch, And its loose earth into brimstone, And its land will become burning pitch.It will not be extinguished night or day; Its smoke will go up forever. From generation to generation it will be desolate; None will pass through it forever and ever.But pelican and hedgehog will possess it, And owl and raven will dwell in it; And He will stretch over it the line of desolation And the plumb line of emptiness.Its nobles— there is no one there Whom they may proclaim king— And all its officials will be nothing.Thorns will come up in its fortified towers, Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities; It will also be a haunt of jackals And a habitat of ostriches.The desert creatures will meet with the wolves, The goat also will cry to its kind. Yes, the night bird will settle there And will find herself a resting place.The tree snake will make its nest and lay eggs there, And it will hatch and gather them under its protection. Yes, the hawks will be gathered there, Every one with its kind.Seek from the book of the Lord, and read: Not one of these will be missing; None will lack its mate. For His mouth has commanded, And His Spirit has gathered them.He has cast the lot for them, And His hand has divided it to them by the measuring line. They shall possess it forever; From generation to generation they will dwell in it.

For I will not contend forever, Nor will I always be angry; For the spirit would grow faint before Me, And the breath of those whom I have made.

Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,and do not give the devil an opportunity.

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;

“ I have loved you,” says the Lord. But you say,“ How have You loved us?”“ Was Esau not Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord.“ Yet I have loved Jacob;

Will You be angry with us forever? Will You prolong Your anger to all generations?
