But there was a certain man, Simon by name, who beforetime in the city used sorcery, and amazed the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

有巫名西門者、行邪道於城中。誇妄自尊、邑民皆為其熒惑、

Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,

holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof: from these also turn away.

Many also of them that had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.And not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.So mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.

For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who are just escaping from them that live in error;
