Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth. Later Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

Then God made a covenant with Abraham. God told him that circumcision would show who the members of the covenant were. Abraham became Isaac’s father. He circumcised Isaac eight days after he was born. Later, Isaac became Jacob’s father. Jacob had 12 sons. They became the founders of the 12 tribes of Israel.

And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

“ God also gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision at that time. So when Abraham became the father of Isaac, he circumcised him on the eighth day. And the practice was continued when Isaac became the father of Jacob, and when Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs of the Israelite nation.

And so he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. After this, he fathered Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

And He gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham fathered Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac fathered Jacob, and Jacob, the twelve patriarchs.

And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so[ Abraham] begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac[ begat] Jacob; and Jacob[ begat] the twelve patriarchs.

Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac and circumcised him when he was eight days old, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

Then God said to Abraham,“ As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner— those who are not your offspring.Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

The sons of Leah: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali.The sons of Leah’s servant Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.

Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty.

“ Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.

For this was how the promise was stated:“ At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac.Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad— in order that God’s purpose in election might stand:not by works but by him who calls— she was told,“ The older will serve the younger.”Just as it is written:“ Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he enabled her to conceive, but Rachel remained childless.Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said,“ It is because the Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now.”She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said,“ Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said,“ Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said,“ This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob,“ Give me children, or I’ll die!”Jacob became angry with her and said,“ Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?”Then she said,“ Here is Bilhah, my servant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.”So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her,and she became pregnant and bore him a son.Then Rachel said,“ God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son.” Because of this she named him Dan.Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.Then Rachel said,“ I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.” So she named him Naphtali.When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.Then Leah said,“ What good fortune!” So she named him Gad.Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.Then Leah said,“ How happy I am! The women will call me happy.” So she named him Asher.During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah,“ Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”But she said to her,“ Wasn’t it enough that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”“ Very well,” Rachel said,“ he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him.“ You must sleep with me,” she said.“ I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he slept with her that night.God listened to Leah, and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son.Then Leah said,“ God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son.Then Leah said,“ God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor, because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and enabled her to conceive.She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said,“ God has taken away my disgrace.”She named him Joseph, and said,“ May the Lord add to me another son.”

Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.

Abraham was the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel.

Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.The babies jostled each other within her, and she said,“ Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.The Lord said to her,“ Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau.After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before!

Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case.

Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder!

As she breathed her last— for she was dying— she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin.

Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision( though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath.

These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah;Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin;Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.

These were the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.
