And Saul approved of their killing him. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting that person to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you.

They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.

They produced false witnesses, who testified,“ This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.

“ Take the blasphemer outside the camp. All those who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the entire assembly is to stone him.Say to the Israelites:‘ Anyone who curses their God will be held responsible;anyone who blasphemes the name of the Lord is to be put to death. The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native- born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death.

Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying,“ Naboth has cursed both God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.

I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison,

You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death, and then the hands of all the people.Stone them to death, because they tried to turn you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.”

Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priestand asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him,“ Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”“ Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.“ I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.“ Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone.Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus.For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision,“ Ananias!”“ Yes, Lord,” he answered.The Lord told him,“ Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying.In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”“ Lord,” Ananias answered,“ I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem.And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”But the Lord said to Ananias,“ Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said,“ Brother Saul, the Lord— Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here— has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus.

Then they secretly persuaded some men to say,“ We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”

and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying,“ How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”Jesus answered,“ I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.

And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore.
