And God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him.

是時天主未嘗在此地賜之以業、即立足之地、亦未賜之、惟許以此地賜彼及其子孫為業、時亞伯拉罕尚未有子也、

然未嘗畀之為業、抑且身無立錐之地、惟有以此賜彼及其後裔為業之許諾。而亞伯漢當時固未有後也。

He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child.

God didn’t give him any property here. He didn’t even give him enough land to set his foot on. But God made a promise to him and to all his family after him. He said they would possess the land. The promise was made even though at that time Abraham had no child.

Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.

“ But God gave him no inheritance here, not even one square foot of land. God did promise, however, that eventually the whole land would belong to Abraham and his descendants— even though he had no children yet.

Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said,“ To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.

On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying:“ To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates—

Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

You found his heart faithful before You, And made a covenant with him To give the land of the Canaanites, The Hittites, the Amorites, The Perizzites, the Jebusites, And the Girgashites— To give it to his descendants. You have performed Your words, For You are righteous.

Then the Lord said to him,“ This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying,‘ I will give it to your descendants.’ I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.”

“ I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

And behold, the Lord stood above it and said:“ I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants.Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”

It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

and that you may prolong your days in the land which the Lord swore to give your fathers, to them and their descendants,‘ a land flowing with milk and honey.’

By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise;for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the Lord.’”

“ So it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities which you did not build,houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant— when you have eaten and are full—

And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.”Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart,“ Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”And Abraham said to God,“ Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”Then God said:“ No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.

Then the Lord said to me,‘ Arise, begin your journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.’

Do not meddle with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as one footstep, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.

He remembers His covenant forever, The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations,The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac,And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel as an everlasting covenant,Saying,“ To you I will give the land of Canaan As the allotment of your inheritance,”When they were few in number, Indeed very few, and strangers in it.

So Sarai said to Abram,“ See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.

But Abram said,“ Lord GOD, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”Then Abram said,“ Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!”And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying,“ This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.”Then He brought him outside and said,“ Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him,“ So shall your descendants be.”

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland.And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return.But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
