然未嘗畀之為業、抑且身無立錐之地、惟有以此賜彼及其後裔為業之許諾。而亞伯漢當時固未有後也。

當此之時、上帝未嘗以尺土賜之、然以此地許彼為業、爰及苗裔、時、亞伯拉罕尚未有子也、

是時天主未嘗在此地賜之以業、即立足之地、亦未賜之、惟許以此地賜彼及其子孫為業、時亞伯拉罕尚未有子也、

He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child.

God didn’t give him any property here. He didn’t even give him enough land to set his foot on. But God made a promise to him and to all his family after him. He said they would possess the land. The promise was made even though at that time Abraham had no child.

Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.

復憑信德、而羇旅於承許之地、與共承恩諾之依灑格雅各伯同寓棚帳之中；蓋彼所企望者、乃一具有根基之城府、天主所營、天主所築也。

所盟誓。將聖言。詔萬世。受盟者。亞伯漢。聞誓者。曰義繖。向雅谷。申舊命。俾吾族。永保定。吾賜爾。迦南地。爾子孫。繩繩繼。當彼時。人可數。在迦南。如客旅。

此數人者、皆懷抱信德而死、生前未見恩諾之通盤實現、惟高瞻遠矚、延頸舉踵企而迎之。同時復自認人生在世、猶如羇旅他鄉、暫作過客而已。作是語者、明示若輩之家園、實另有所在也。若云懷其本鄉、則儘有歸返之機緣。然若輩之所懷者、實有愈於本鄉、則天國是已。是故天主亦不以稱若輩之天主為恥、且早已為之備一聖邑矣。
