Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.

是時天主未嘗在此地賜之以業、即立足之地、亦未賜之、惟許以此地賜彼及其子孫為業、時亞伯拉罕尚未有子也、

然未嘗畀之為業、抑且身無立錐之地、惟有以此賜彼及其後裔為業之許諾。而亞伯漢當時固未有後也。

He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child.

God didn’t give him any property here. He didn’t even give him enough land to set his foot on. But God made a promise to him and to all his family after him. He said they would possess the land. The promise was made even though at that time Abraham had no child.

“ But God gave him no inheritance here, not even one square foot of land. God did promise, however, that eventually the whole land would belong to Abraham and his descendants— even though he had no children yet.

Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said,“ To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.

On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying,“ To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,

Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father.

You found his heart faithful before you, and made with him the covenant to give to his offspring the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite. And you have kept your promise, for you are righteous.

And the Lord said to him,“ This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob,‘ I will give it to your offspring.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.”

“ I am a sojourner and foreigner among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

And behold, the Lord stood above it and said,“ I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring.Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

and that you may live long in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give to them and to their offspring, a land flowing with milk and honey.

By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.

I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord.’”

“ And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you— with great and good cities that you did not build,and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant— and when you eat and are full,

I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself,“ Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”And Abraham said to God,“ Oh that Ishmael might live before you!”God said,“ No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.

And the Lord said to me,‘ Arise, go on your journey at the head of the people, so that they may go in and possess the land, which I swore to their fathers to give them.’

Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.

He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac,which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,saying,“ To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.”When they were few in number, of little account, and sojourners in it,

And Sarai said to Abram,“ Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

But Abram said,“ O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”And Abram said,“ Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.”And behold, the word of the Lord came to him:“ This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.”And he brought him outside and said,“ Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him,“ So shall your offspring be.”

These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return.But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
