是時天主未嘗在此地賜之以業、即立足之地、亦未賜之、惟許以此地賜彼及其子孫為業、時亞伯拉罕尚未有子也、

然未嘗畀之為業、抑且身無立錐之地、惟有以此賜彼及其後裔為業之許諾。而亞伯漢當時固未有後也。

He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child.

God didn’t give him any property here. He didn’t even give him enough land to set his foot on. But God made a promise to him and to all his family after him. He said they would possess the land. The promise was made even though at that time Abraham had no child.

Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.

我必把你現在的寄居之地，就是迦南全地，賜給你和你的後裔作永遠的產業；我也必作他們的神。」

耶和華向亞伯蘭顯現，說：「我必把這地賜給你的後裔。」亞伯蘭就在那裡為向他顯現的耶和華築了一座祭壇。

你所看見的一切地，我都必賜給你和你的後裔，直到永遠。

就在那一天，耶和華與亞伯蘭立約，說：「我已經把這地賜給你的後裔，從埃及河直到幼發拉底大河，

你要寄居在這地，我必與你同在，並祝福你，因為我必把所有這些地都賜給你和你的後裔；我必確立我向你父親亞伯拉罕所起的誓。

「我在你們中間是寄居者，是客旅；請把你們中間的一塊地產給我作墳地，好讓我把死者從我身旁移去安葬。」

看哪，耶和華站在梯子上方，說：「我是耶和華，你父親亞伯拉罕的神、以撒的神。我必把你現在躺臥之地，賜給你和你的後裔。你的後裔必如同地上的塵土；你必向東南西北擴展；地上萬族都必因你和你的後裔而蒙福。看哪，我與你同在！你無論往哪裡去，我都會保守你，並且要把你帶回這地。我必不離棄你，直到成就了我對你所說的。」

因著信，他做為外人客居在應許之地，住在帳幕裡，與同一個應許的共同繼承人以撒、雅各一樣，因為他等待著那座有根基的城；那城是神所設計、所建造的。

我要祝福她，也要藉著她賜給你一個兒子。我要祝福她，她將成為多國之母，萬族的君王要從她而出。」亞伯拉罕就臉伏於地笑了，心裡說：「難道一百歲的人還能生孩子嗎？就是撒拉也已經九十歲了，還能生育嗎？」亞伯拉罕對神說：「但願以實瑪利活在你面前。」神說：「不，你的妻子撒拉將為你生一個兒子，你要給他起名為以撒。我要與他確立我的約，作為他後裔永遠的約。

他記念自己的約，直到永遠；記念他吩咐的話，直到千代——就是他與亞伯拉罕所立的約，向以撒所起的誓；又把這約給雅各立為律例，給以色列立為永遠的約；他說：「我要把迦南地賜給你，作為你們繼業的份。」那時他們人數稀少，實在很少，在那地是寄居的；

撒萊對亞伯蘭說：「看哪，耶和華使我不能生育，請你與我的婢女同房，或許我可以藉著她立後。」亞伯蘭聽從了撒萊的話。

亞伯蘭說：「主耶和華啊，你要賜給我什麼呢？我一直沒有孩子，我家業的繼承人是大馬士革人以利以謝。」亞伯蘭又說：「看哪，既然你沒有賜給我後裔，那生在我家裡的就是我的繼承人了。」耶和華的話語又臨到他，說：「這人不會是你的繼承人，只有你親生的，才會是你的繼承人。」耶和華把他帶到外面，說：「你向天觀看，如果你能數清星辰，就去數吧！」又對他說：「你的後裔也必如此眾多。」

這些人都懷著信仰死去，沒有得到那些所應許的，卻遠遠地看見並且歡迎它們，又承認自己在地上是異鄉人，是寄居的。實際上，說這樣話的人，是表明他們在尋求一個家鄉。如果他們真是想念自己所離開的地方，他們還有機會回去；但如今，他們所嚮往的是一個更美好的，就是在天上的家鄉。因此，神被稱為「他們的神」並不以為恥；原來他已經為他們預備了一座城。
