After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them. It remained in the land until the time of David,

Our people received the tent from God. Then they brought it with them when they took the land of Canaan. God drove out the nations that were in their way. At that time Joshua was Israel’s leader. The tent remained in the land until David’s time.

Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David,

Years later, when Joshua led our ancestors in battle against the nations that God drove out of this land, the Tabernacle was taken with them into their new territory. And it stayed there until the time of King David.

You, by your power, defeated nations and settled our fathers on their land; you crushed the people living there and enabled our ancestors to occupy it.

The entire Israelite community assembled at Shiloh and there they set up the tent of meeting. Though they had subdued the land,

After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave his people their land as an inheritance.

“ The LORD drove out from before you great and mighty nations; no one has been able to resist you to this very day.

The LORD drove out from before us all the nations, including the Amorites who lived in the land. So we too will worship the LORD, for he is our God!”

David constructed buildings in the City of David; he then prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it.Then David said,“ Only the Levites may carry the ark of God, for the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to serve before him perpetually.David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring the ark of the LORD up to the place he had prepared for it.David gathered together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:From the descendants of Kohath: Uriel the leader and 120 of his relatives.From the descendants of Merari: Asaiah the leader and 220 of his relatives.From the descendants of Gershom: Joel the leader and 130 of his relatives.From the descendants of Elizaphan: Shemaiah the leader and 200 of his relatives.From the descendants of Hebron: Eliel the leader and 80 of his relatives.From the descendants of Uzziel: Amminadab the leader and 112 of his relatives.David summoned the priests Zadok and Abiathar, along with the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.He told them:“ You are the leaders of the Levites’ families. You and your relatives must consecrate yourselves and bring the ark of the LORD God of Israel up to the place I have prepared for it.The first time you did not carry it; that is why the LORD God attacked us, because we did not ask him about the proper way to carry it.”The priests and Levites consecrated themselves so they could bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel.The descendants of Levi carried the ark of God on their shoulders with poles, just as Moses had ordered according to the divine command.David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint some of their relatives as musicians; they were to play various instruments, including stringed instruments and cymbals, and to sing loudly and joyfully.So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; one of his relatives, Asaph son of Berechiah; one of the descendants of Merari, Ethan son of Kushaiah;

David again assembled all the best men in Israel, thirty thousand in number.David and all the men who were with him traveled to Baalah in Judah to bring up from there the ark of God which is called by the name of the LORD of hosts, who sits enthroned between the cherubim that are on it.They loaded the ark of God on a new cart and carried it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart.They brought it with the ark of God up from the house of Abinadab on the hill. Ahio was walking in front of the ark,while David and all Israel were energetically celebrating before the LORD, singing and playing various stringed instruments, tambourines, rattles, and cymbals.When they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and grabbed hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled.The LORD was so furious with Uzzah, he killed him on the spot for his negligence. He died right there beside the ark of God.David was angry because the LORD attacked Uzzah; so he called that place Perez Uzzah, which remains its name to this very day.David was afraid of the LORD that day and said,“ How will the ark of the LORD ever come to me?”So David was no longer willing to bring the ark of the LORD to be with him in the City of David. David left it in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months. The LORD blessed Obed-Edom and all his family.David was told,“ The LORD has blessed the family of Obed-Edom and everything he owns because of the ark of God.” So David went and joyfully brought the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David.Those who carried the ark of the LORD took six steps and then David sacrificed an ox and a fatling calf.Now David, wearing a linen ephod, was dancing with all his strength before the LORD.David and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD, shouting and blowing trumpets.As the ark of the LORD entered the City of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked out the window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him.They brought the ark of the LORD and put it in its place in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before the LORD.When David finished offering the burnt sacrifices and peace offerings, he pronounced a blessing over the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.He then handed out to each member of the entire assembly of Israel, both men and women, a portion of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake. Then all the people went home.When David went home to pronounce a blessing on his own house, Michal, Saul’s daughter, came out to meet him. She said,“ How the king of Israel has distinguished himself this day! He has exposed himself today before his servants’ slave girls the way a vulgar fool might do!”David replied to Michal,“ It was before the LORD! I was celebrating before the LORD, who chose me over your father and his entire family and appointed me as leader over the LORD’s people Israel.I am willing to shame and humiliate myself even more than this! But with the slave girls whom you mentioned let me be distinguished!”Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, had no children to the day of her death.

Zadok the priest and his fellow priests served before the LORD’s tabernacle at the worship center in Gibeon,

The priests and Levites carried the ark of the LORD, the tent of meeting, and all the holy items in the tent.

He drove the nations out from before them; he assigned them their tribal allotments and allowed the tribes of Israel to settle down.

Now the LORD’s tabernacle( which Moses had made in the wilderness) and the altar for burnt sacrifices were at that time at the worship center in Gibeon.

So the army sent to Shiloh, and they took from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts who sits between the cherubim. Now the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phineas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

Joshua told the priests,“ Pick up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.” So they picked up the ark of the covenant and went ahead of the people.The LORD told Joshua,“ This very day I will begin to honor you before all Israel so they will know that I am with you just as I was with Moses.

Their descendants entered and possessed the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites who were the inhabitants of the land. You delivered them into their hand, together with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with as they pleased.

“ Go up to this Abarim hill country, to Mount Nebo( which is in the land of Moab opposite Jericho) and look at the land of Canaan that I am giving to the Israelites as a possession.

For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken afterward about another day.

Look! The ark of the covenant of the Ruler of the whole earth is ready to enter the Jordan ahead of you.Now select for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one per tribe.When the feet of the priests carrying the ark of the LORD, the Ruler of the whole earth, touch the water of the Jordan, the water coming downstream toward you will stop flowing and pile up.”So when the people left their tents to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them.When the ones carrying the ark reached the Jordan and the feet of the priests carrying the ark touched the surface of the water–( the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest time)–the water coming downstream toward them stopped flowing. It piled up far upstream at Adam( the city near Zarethan); there was no water at all flowing to the sea of the Arabah( the Salt Sea). The people crossed the river opposite Jericho.The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firmly on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan. All Israel crossed over on dry ground until the entire nation was on the other side.

They worshiped Micah’s carved image the whole time God’s authorized shrine was in Shiloh.
