He had come to Jerusalem to worshipand was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah.And the Spirit said to Philip,“ Go over and join this chariot.”So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked,“ Do you understand what you are reading?”And he said,“ How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this:“ Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth.In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.”And the eunuch said to Philip,“ About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?”Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus.And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said,“ See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?”

But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.

And the high priest said,“ Are these things so?”And Stephen said:“ Brothers and fathers, hear me. So it was until the days of David,who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.But it was Solomon who built a house for him.Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,“‘ Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?Did not my hand make all these things?’“ You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him.But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.And he said,“ Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together at him.Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice,“ Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him.

Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews.

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear.

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and a word in season, how good it is!
