Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

In fact, Herod and Pontius Pilate met with the Gentiles in this city. They also met with the people of Israel. All of them made plans against your holy servant Jesus. He is the one you anointed.

“ In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.

And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”

saying,“ The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.”

And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying,“ Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”As soon as He had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him,“ Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him.And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.Then Jesus answered and said to them,“ Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me?I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”Then they all forsook Him and fled.Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him,and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes.But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying,“ We heard Him say,‘ I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’”But not even then did their testimony agree.And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying,“ Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?”But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him,“ Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”Jesus said,“ I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,“ What further need do we have of witnesses?You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him,“ Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.

“ Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death,and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again.”

“ But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said,‘ son, go, work today in my vineyard.’

“ Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles;

And the angel answered and said to her,“ The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

“ The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover.And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them.And they were glad, and agreed to give him money.So he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.

and saying,“ You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said,“ He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him.He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”

Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying,“ Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus said to him,“ It is as you say.”And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.Then Pilate said to Him,“ Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?”But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished.And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them,“ Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying,“ Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.The governor answered and said to them,“ Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said,“ Barabbas!”Pilate said to them,“ What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him,“ Let Him be crucified!”Then the governor said,“ Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, saying,“ Let Him be crucified!”When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying,“ I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.”And all the people answered and said,“ His blood be on us and on our children.”Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him.And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying,“ Hail, King of the Jews!”Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull,they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet:“ They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.”Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.

Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,and plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him.

So I fed the flock for slaughter, in particular the poor of the flock. I took for myself two staffs: the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bonds; and I fed the flock.I dismissed the three shepherds in one month. My soul loathed them, and their soul also abhorred me.

“ The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

“ Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”

Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death,but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forwardand said,“ This fellow said,‘ I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’”And the high priest arose and said to Him,“ Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?”But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him,“ I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”Jesus said to him,“ It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying,“ He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!What do you think?” They answered and said,“ He is deserving of death.”Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands,saying,“ Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?”

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let Him go.But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,

Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said,“ He saved others; Himself He cannot save.

The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.Jesus answered him,“ I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing.Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying,“ Do You answer the high priest like that?”Jesus answered him,“ If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world,‘ You are blaspheming,’ because I said,‘ I am the Son of God’?

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered.And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples.Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them,“ Whom are you seeking?”They answered Him,“ Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them,“ I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.Now when He said to them,“ I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.Then He asked them again,“ Whom are you seeking?” And they said,“ Jesus of Nazareth.”Jesus answered,“ I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,”that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke,“ Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.So Jesus said to Peter,“ Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?”Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

“ What is man, that he could be pure? And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one!

Thus says the Lord, The Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, To Him whom man despises, To Him whom the nation abhors, To the Servant of rulers:“ Kings shall see and arise, Princes also shall worship, Because of the Lord who is faithful, The Holy One of Israel; And He has chosen You.”

He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.Then Pilate asked Him,“ Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered and said to him,“ It is as you say.”And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.Then Pilate asked Him again, saying,“ Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!”But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.But Pilate answered them, saying,“ Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.Pilate answered and said to them again,“ What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”So they cried out again,“ Crucify Him!”Then Pilate said to them,“ Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more,“ Crucify Him!”So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,and began to salute Him,“ Hail, King of the Jews!”Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.

The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,

After two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death.But they said,“ Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people.”

You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.

How then can man be righteous before God? Or how can he be pure who is born of a woman?

Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.Pilate then went out to them and said,“ What accusation do you bring against this Man?”They answered and said to him,“ If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”Then Pilate said to them,“ You take Him and judge Him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him,“ It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,”that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die.Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him,“ Are You the King of the Jews?”Jesus answered him,“ Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”Pilate answered,“ Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”Jesus answered,“ My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”Pilate therefore said to Him,“ Are You a king then?” Jesus answered,“ You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”Pilate said to Him,“ What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them,“ I find no fault in Him at all.“ But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”Then they all cried again, saying,“ Not this Man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe.Then they said,“ Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck Him with their hands.Pilate then went out again, and said to them,“ Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them,“ Behold the Man!”Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying,“ Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them,“ You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”The Jews answered him,“ We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.”Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid,and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus,“ Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.Then Pilate said to Him,“ Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?”Jesus answered,“ You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying,“ If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews,“ Behold your King!”But they cried out,“ Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them,“ Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered,“ We have no king but Caesar!”Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus and led Him away.And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha,where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate,“ Do not write,‘ The King of the Jews,’ but,‘ He said,“ I am the King of the Jews.”’”Pilate answered,“ What I have written, I have written.”Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.They said therefore among themselves,“ Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:“ They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.

“ Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying,‘ This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others.” And when they heard it they said,“ Certainly not!”Then He looked at them and said,“ What then is this that is written:‘ The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone’?Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people— for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying,“ Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?”And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying,“ If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them,“ If I tell you, you will by no means believe.And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go.Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”Then they all said,“ Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them,“ You rightly say that I am.”And they said,“ What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”Then the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pilate.And they began to accuse Him, saying,“ We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”Then Pilate asked Him, saying,“ Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered him and said,“ It is as you say.”So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd,“ I find no fault in this Man.”But they were the more fierce, saying,“ He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.”

And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him.Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing.And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him.Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.That very day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,said to them,“ You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him;no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him.I will therefore chastise Him and release Him”

And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.But Jesus said to him,“ Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him,“ Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.But Jesus answered and said,“ Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him,“ Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?

For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;

Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying,“ Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt,and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,“ Out of Egypt I called My Son.”Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.

Then He took the twelve aside and said to them,“ Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished.For He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon.They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to Him,“ Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.”And He said to them,“ Go, tell that fox,‘ Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.’Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus
