In fact, Herod and Pontius Pilate met with the Gentiles in this city. They also met with the people of Israel. All of them made plans against your holy servant Jesus. He is the one you anointed.

So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

And he said,“ The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”

Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them:“ The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.”Going at once to Jesus, Judas said,“ Rabbi!” and kissed him.The men seized Jesus and arrested him.Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.“ Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus,“ that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”Then everyone deserted him and fled.A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him,he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together.Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:“ We heard him say,‘ I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’”Yet even then their testimony did not agree.Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus,“ Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him,“ Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”“ I am,” said Jesus.“ And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”The high priest tore his clothes.“ Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked.“ You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said,“ Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.

“ We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to deathand will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”

“ What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’

“ We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said,“ and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,

The angel answered,“ The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,

Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.

Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.They were delighted and agreed to give him money.He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

and saying,“ You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him.“ He saved others,” they said,“ but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”

Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?”“ You have said so,” Jesus replied.When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.Then Pilate asked him,“ Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge— to the great amazement of the governor.Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.At that time they had a well- known prisoner whose name was Jesus Barabbas.So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them,“ Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”For he knew it was out of self- interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message:“ Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.“ Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.“ Barabbas,” they answered.“ What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered,“ Crucify him!”“ Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder,“ Crucify him!”When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd.“ I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said.“ It is your responsibility!”All the people answered,“ His blood is on us and on our children!”Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him.“ Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.They came to a place called Golgotha( which means“ the place of the skull”).There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.

So I shepherded the flock marked for slaughter, particularly the oppressed of the flock. Then I took two staffs and called one Favor and the other Union, and I shepherded the flock.In one month I got rid of the three shepherds. The flock detested me, and I grew weary of them

“ The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,

“ I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forwardand declared,“ This fellow said,‘ I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus,“ Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him,“ I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”“ You have said so,” Jesus replied.“ But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,“ He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.What do you think?”“ He is worthy of death,” they answered.Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped himand said,“ Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”

The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go.You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you.

In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves.“ He saved others,” they said,“ but he can’t save himself!

Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.“ I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied.“ I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face.“ Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.“ If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied,“ testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said,‘ I am God’s Son’?

When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them,“ Who is it you want?”“ Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.“ I am he,” Jesus said.( And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)When Jesus said,“ I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.Again he asked them,“ Who is it you want?”“ Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.Jesus answered,“ I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled:“ I have not lost one of those you gave me.”Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear.( The servant’s name was Malchus.)Jesus commanded Peter,“ Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound himand brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

“ What are mortals, that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous?

Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one!

This is what the Lord says— the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel— to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers:“ Kings will see you and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.“ Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate.“ You have said so,” Jesus replied.The chief priests accused him of many things.So again Pilate asked him,“ Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested.A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising.The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.“ Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate,knowing it was out of self- interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.“ What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.“ Crucify him!” they shouted.“ Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder,“ Crucify him!”Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace( that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.And they began to call out to him,“ Hail, king of the Jews!”Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha( which means“ the place of the skull”).Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left.

The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,

Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.“ But not during the festival,” they said,“ or the people may riot.”

You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.

because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay.

How then can a mortal be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure?

Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.So Pilate came out to them and asked,“ What charges are you bringing against this man?”“ If he were not a criminal,” they replied,“ we would not have handed him over to you.”Pilate said,“ Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”“ But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?”“ Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked,“ or did others talk to you about me?”“ Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied.“ Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”Jesus said,“ My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”“ You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered,“ You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”“ What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said,“ I find no basis for a charge against him.But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release‘ the king of the Jews’?They shouted back,“ No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robeand went up to him again and again, saying,“ Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there,“ Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them,“ Here is the man!”As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted,“ Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered,“ You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”The Jewish leaders insisted,“ We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,and he went back inside the palace.“ Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.“ Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said.“ Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”Jesus answered,“ You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting,“ If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement( which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon.“ Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.But they shouted,“ Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”“ Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.“ We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull( which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).There they crucified him, and with him two others— one on each side and Jesus in the middle.Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews.Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate,“ Do not write‘ The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.Pilate answered,“ What I have written, I have written.”When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.“ Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another.“ Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said,“ They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did.

“ Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’“ But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over.‘ This is the heir,’ they said.‘ Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.“ What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said,“ God forbid!”Jesus looked directly at them and asked,“ Then what is the meaning of that which is written:“‘ The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.

The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.They blindfolded him and demanded,“ Prophesy! Who hit you?”And they said many other insulting things to him.At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.“ If you are the Messiah,” they said,“ tell us.” Jesus answered,“ If I tell you, you will not believe me,and if I asked you, you would not answer.But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”They all asked,“ Are you then the Son of God?” He replied,“ You say that I am.”Then they said,“ Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.And they began to accuse him, saying,“ We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”So Pilate asked Jesus,“ Are you the king of the Jews?”“ You have said so,” Jesus replied.Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd,“ I find no basis for a charge against this man.”But they insisted,“ He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.”

When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort.He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him.Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate.That day Herod and Pilate became friends— before this they had been enemies.Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people,and said to them,“ You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death.Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.”

While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him,but Jesus asked him,“ Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said,“ Lord, should we strike with our swords?”And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.But Jesus answered,“ No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him,“ Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?

Such a high priest truly meets our need— one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.“ Get up,” he said,“ take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet:“ Out of Egypt I called my son.”When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.

Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them,“ We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him;they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.”

At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him,“ Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.”He replied,“ Go tell that fox,‘ I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day— for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
