Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

In fact, Herod and Pontius Pilate met with the Gentiles in this city. They also met with the people of Israel. All of them made plans against your holy servant Jesus. He is the one you anointed.

“ In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.

and they bound Him and led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate the governor.

while You extend Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.”

saying,“ The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised on the third day.”

And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve,* came up, accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who were from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying,“ Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him and lead Him away under guard.”And after coming, Judas immediately went to Him and* said,“ Rabbi!” and kissed Him.And they laid hands on Him and arrested Him.But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.And Jesus said to them,“ Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a man inciting a revolt?Every day I was with you within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me; but this has taken place so that the Scriptures will be fulfilled.”And His disciples all left Him and fled.A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they* seized him.But he pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes* gathered together.And Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the fire.Now the chief priests and the entire Council were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any.For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent.And then some stood up and began giving false testimony against Him, saying,“ We heard Him say,‘ I will destroy this temple that was made by hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.’ ”And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent.And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying,“ Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?”But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and* said to Him,“ Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”And Jesus said,“ I am; and you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”Tearing his clothes, the high priest* said,“ What further need do we have of witnesses?You have heard the blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death.And some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him,“ Prophesy!” Then the officers took custody of Him and slapped Him in the face.

“ Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death,and they will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and flog and crucify, and on the third day He will be raised up.”

“ But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said,‘ Son, go work today in the vineyard.’

saying,“ Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles.

The angel answered and said to her,“ The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason also the holy Child will be called the Son of God.

He came to His own, and His own people did not accept Him.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord anointed me To bring good news to the humble; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim release to captives And freedom to prisoners;

Yet one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.And the chief priests and the scribes were trying to find a way to put Him to death, since they were afraid of the people.And Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, who belonged to the number of the twelve.And he left and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he was to betray Him to them.And they were delighted, and agreed to give him money.And so he consented, and began looking for a good opportunity to betray Him to them away from the crowd.

and saying,“ You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,“ He saved others; He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.He has trusted in God; let God rescue Him now, if He takes pleasure in Him; for He said,‘ I am the Son of God.’ ”

Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying,“ So You are the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him,“ It is as you say.”And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not offer any answer.Then Pilate* said to Him,“ Do You not hear how many things they are testifying against You?”And still He did not answer him in regard to even a single charge, so the governor was greatly amazed.Now at the Passover Feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people any one prisoner whom they wanted.And at that time they were holding a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them,“ Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”For he knew that it was because of envy that they had handed Him over.And while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying,“ See that you have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.”But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and to put Jesus to death.And the governor said to them,“ Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said,“ Barabbas.”Pilate* said to them,“ Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all* said,“ Crucify Him!”But he said,“ Why, what evil has He done?” Yet they kept shouting all the more, saying,“ Crucify Him!”Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying,“ I am innocent of this Man’s blood; you yourselves shall see.”And all the people replied,“ His blood shall be on us and on our children!”Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort to Him.And they stripped Him and put a red cloak on Him.And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying,“ Hail, King of the Jews!”And they spit on Him, and took the reed and beat Him on the head.And after they had mocked Him, they took the cloak off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.As they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they compelled to carry His cross.And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull,they gave Him wine mixed with bile to drink; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink it.And when they had crucified Him, they divided His garments among themselves by casting lots.And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there.

At that time the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the courtyard of the high priest named Caiaphas;and they plotted together to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.

So I pastured the flock doomed to slaughter, therefore also the afflicted of the flock. And I took for myself two staffs: the one I called Favor, and the other I called Union; so I pastured the flock.Then I did away with the three shepherds in one month, for my soul was impatient with them, and their soul also was tired of me.

“ The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed,

“ But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”

Now the chief priests and the entire Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward,and said,“ This man stated,‘ I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.’ ”The high priest stood up and said to Him,“ Do You offer no answer for what these men are testifying against You?”But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him,“ I place You under oath by the living God, to tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.”Jesus* said to him,“ You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his robes and said,“ He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? See, you have now heard the blasphemy;what do you think?” They answered,“ He deserves death!”Then they spit in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him,and said,“ Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you handed over and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him.But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,

In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying,“ He saved others; He cannot save Himself!

The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching.Jesus answered him,“ I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple area, where all the Jews congregate; and I said nothing in secret.Why are you asking Me? Ask those who have heard what I spoke to them. Look: these people know what I said.”But when He said this, one of the officers, who was standing nearby, struck Jesus, saying,“ Is that the way You answer the high priest?”Jesus answered him,“ If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?”So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

are you saying of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world,‘ You are blaspheming,’ because I said,‘ I am the Son of God’?

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went away with His disciples across the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden which He entered with His disciples.Now Judas, who was betraying Him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples.So Judas, having obtained the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees,* came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, came out into the open and* said to them,“ Whom are you seeking?”They answered Him,“ Jesus the Nazarene.” He* said to them,“ I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.Now then, when He said to them,“ I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.He then asked them again,“ Whom are you seeking?” And they said,“ Jesus the Nazarene.”Jesus answered,“ I told you that I am He; so if you are seeking Me, let these men go on their way.”This took place so that the word which He spoke would be fulfilled:“ Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.”Then Simon Peter, since he had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus.So Jesus said to Peter,“ Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, am I not to drink it?”So the Roman cohort, the commander, and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him,and brought Him to Annas first; for he was the father in law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was in their best interest for one man to die in behalf of the people.

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

What is man, that he would be pure, Or he who is born of a woman, that he would be righteous?

Who can make the clean out of the unclean? No one!

This is what the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and its Holy One, Says to the despised One, To the One abhorred by the nation, To the Servant of rulers:“ Kings will see and arise, Princes will also bow down, Because of the Lord who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You.”

He was despised and abandoned by men, A man of great pain and familiar with sickness; And like one from whom people hide their faces, He was despised, and we had no regard for Him.

Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders, scribes, and the entire Council immediately held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led Him away, and turned Him over to Pilate.Pilate questioned Him:“ So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him,“ It is as you say.”And the chief priests started accusing Him of many things.But Pilate questioned Him again, saying,“ Do You offer nothing in answer? See how many charges they are bringing against You!”But Jesus said nothing further in answer, so Pilate was amazed.Now at the Passover Feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested.And the one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the revolt.And the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.Pilate answered them, saying,“ Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.And responding again, Pilate said to them,“ Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”They shouted back,“ Crucify Him!”But Pilate said to them,“ Why, what evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more,“ Crucify Him!”Intent on satisfying the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.Now the soldiers took Him away into the palace( that is, the Praetorium), and they* called together the whole Roman cohort.And they* dressed Him in purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;and they began saluting Him:“ Hail, King of the Jews!”And they repeatedly beat His head with a reed and spit on Him, and kneeling, they bowed down before Him.And after they had mocked Him, they took the purple cloak off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they* led Him out to crucify Him.And they* compelled a passer by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene( the father of Alexander and Rufus), to carry His cross.Then they* brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.And they tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.And they* crucified Him, and* divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man would take.Now it was the third hour when they crucified Him.The inscription of the charge against Him read,“ THE KING OF THE JEWS.”And they* crucified two rebels with Him, one on His right and one on His left.

The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers conspire together Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,

Now the Passover and Festival of Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest Him covertly and kill Him;for they were saying,“ Not during the festival, otherwise there will be a riot of the people.”

You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your companions.

For You will not abandon my soul to Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.

How then can mankind be righteous with God? Or how can anyone who is born of woman be pure?

Then they* brought Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter the Praetorium, so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.Therefore Pilate came out to them and* said,“ What accusation are you bringing against this Man?”They answered and said to him,“ If this Man were not a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you.”So Pilate said to them,“ Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him,“ We are not permitted to put anyone to death.”This happened so that the word of Jesus which He said, indicating what kind of death He was going to die, would be fulfilled.Therefore Pilate entered the Praetorium again, and summoned Jesus and said to Him,“ You are the King of the Jews?”Jesus answered,“ Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you about Me?”Pilate answered,“ I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me; what have You done?”Jesus answered,“ My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”Therefore Pilate said to Him,“ So You are a king?” Jesus answered,“ You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.”Pilate* said to Him,“ What is truth?” And after saying this, he came out again to the Jews and* said to them,“ I find no grounds at all for charges in His case.However, you have a custom that I release one prisoner for you at the Passover; therefore do you wish that I release for you the King of the Jews?”So they shouted again, saying,“ Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a rebel.So Pilate then took Jesus and had Him flogged.And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on His head, and put a purple cloak on Him;and they repeatedly came up to Him and said,“ Hail, King of the Jews!” and slapped Him in the face again and again.And then Pilate came out again and* said to them,“ See, I am bringing Him out to you so that you will know that I find no grounds at all for charges in His case.”Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate* said to them,“ Behold, the Man!”So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they shouted, saying,“ Crucify, crucify!” Pilate* said to them,“ Take Him yourselves and crucify Him; for I find no grounds for charges in His case!”The Jews answered him,“ We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He made Himself out to be the Son of God!”Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid;and he entered the Praetorium again and* said to Jesus,“ Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.So Pilate* said to Him,“ Are you not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?”Jesus answered him,“ You would have no authority over Me at all, if it had not been given to you from above; for this reason the one who handed Me over to you has the greater sin.”As a result of this, Pilate made efforts to release Him; but the Jews shouted, saying,“ If you release this Man, you are not a friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar!”Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement— but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he* said to the Jews,“ Look, your King!”So they shouted,“ Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate* said to them,“ Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered,“ We have no king except Caesar.”So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, carrying His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which in Hebrew is called, Golgotha.There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.Now Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written:“ JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek.So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate,“ Do not write,‘ The King of the Jews’; rather, write that He said,‘ I am King of the Jews.’ ”Pilate answered,“ What I have written, I have written.”Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts: a part to each soldier, and the tunic also; but the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece.So they said to one another,“ Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be.” This happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled:“ They divided My garments among themselves, and they cast lots for My clothing.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Now the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What am I to do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’But when the vine growers saw him, they discussed with one another, saying,‘ This is the heir; let’s kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’And so they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them?He will come and put these vine growers to death, and will give the vineyard to others.” However, when they heard this, they said,“ May it never happen!”But Jesus looked at them and said,“ Then what is this statement that has been written:‘ A stone which the builders rejected, This has become the chief cornerstone’?Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and yet they feared the people; for they were aware that He had spoken this parable against them.

The men who were holding Jesus in custody began mocking Him and beating Him,and they blindfolded Him and repeatedly asked Him, saying,“ Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?”And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming.When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying,“ If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them,“ If I tell you, you will not believe;and if I ask a question, you will not answer.But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”And they all said,“ So You are the Son of God?” And He said to them,“ You say correctly that I am.”And then they said,“ What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth!”Then the entire assembly of them set out and brought Him before Pilate.And they began to bring charges against Him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”Now Pilate asked Him, saying,“ So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said,“ It is as you say.”But Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds,“ I find no grounds for charges in the case of this man.”But they kept on insisting, saying,“ He is stirring up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee, as far as this place!”

And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, since he also was in Jerusalem at this time.Now Herod was overjoyed when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him.And he questioned Him at some length; but He offered him no answer at all.Now the chief priests and the scribes stood there, vehemently charging Him.And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, dressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.And so Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for previously, they had been enemies toward each other.Now Pilate summoned to himself the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,and he said to them,“ You brought this man to me on the ground that he is inciting the people to revolt; and behold, after examining Him before you, I have found no basis at all in the case of this man for the charges which you are bringing against Him.No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him.Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”[ Now he was obligated to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]But they cried out all together, saying,“ Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas!”( He was one who had been thrown into prison for a revolt that took place in the city, and for murder.)But Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again,but they kept on crying out, saying,“ Crucify, crucify Him!”And he said to them a third time,“ Why, what has this man done wrong? I have found in His case no grounds for a sentence of death; therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”But they were insistent, with loud voices, demanding that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail.And so Pilate decided to have their demand carried out.And he released the man for whom they were asking, who had been thrown into prison for a revolt and murder; but he handed Jesus over to their will.And when they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, as he was coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.Now following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were mourning and grieving for Him.But Jesus turned to them and said,“ Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.For behold, days are coming when they will say,‘ Blessed are those who cannot bear, and the wombs that have not given birth, and the breasts that have not nursed.’Then they will begin to say to the mountains,‘ Fall on us,’ and to the hills,‘ Cover us.’For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”Now two others, who were criminals, were also being led away to be put to death with Him.And when they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.[ But Jesus was saying,“ Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”] And they cast lots, dividing His garments among themselves.And the people stood by, watching. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying,“ He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.”The soldiers also ridiculed Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine,and saying,“ If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!”Now there was also an inscription above Him,“ THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading the way for them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him.But Jesus said to him,“ Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said,“ Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.But Jesus responded and said,“ Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.And Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him,“ Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a man inciting a revolt?

For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens;

Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord* appeared to Joseph in a dream and said,“ Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.”So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.He stayed there until the death of Herod; this happened so that what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled:“ Out of Egypt I called My Son.”Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent men and killed all the boys who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.

Now He took the twelve aside and said to them,“ Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all the things that have been written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be ridiculed, and abused, and spit upon,and after they have flogged Him, they will kill Him; and on the third day He will rise.”

At that very time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him,“ Go away and leave this place, because Herod wants to kill You.”And He said to them,“ Go and tell that fox,‘ Behold, I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I reach My goal.’Nevertheless I must go on My journey today and tomorrow and the next day; for it cannot be that a prophet would perish outside Jerusalem.

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus,
