The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

The people were surprised when they heard him.“ How does he know so much when he hasn’t been trained?” they asked.

They were completely amazed.“ How can this be?” they exclaimed.“ These people are all from Galilee,and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!Here we are— Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia,Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome( both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!”They stood there amazed and perplexed.“ What can this mean?” they asked each other.

A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said,“ You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.”

Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in.The woman asked Peter,“ You’re not one of that man’s disciples, are you?”“ No,” he said,“ I am not.”

Then the people who had arrested Jesus led him to the home of Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of religious law and the elders had gathered.Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and came to the high priest’s courtyard. He went in and sat with the guards and waited to see how it would all end.

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers— Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew— throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living.Jesus called out to them,“ Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”And they left their nets at once and followed him.A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too.They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind.

Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around,“ This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her,“ Dear woman, here is your son.”

This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the law. God’s curse is on them!”

Jesus sent Peter and John ahead and said,“ Go and prepare the Passover meal, so we can eat it together.”

Then Jesus spoke to the leading priests, the captains of the Temple guard, and the elders who had come for him.“ Am I some dangerous revolutionary,” he asked,“ that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there every day. But this is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns.”So they arrested him and led him to the high priest’s home. And Peter followed at a distance.

A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said,“ This man was one of Jesus’ followers!”But Peter denied it.“ Woman,” he said,“ I don’t even know him!”After a while someone else looked at him and said,“ You must be one of them!”“ No, man, I’m not!” Peter retorted.About an hour later someone else insisted,“ This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too.”But Peter said,“ Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
