那時候，耶穌說：「父啊，天地的主，我讚美你，因為你把這些事向有智慧的和有學問的人隱藏起來，而向小孩子們顯明出來。

然而神卻揀選了世上愚拙的，為了使那些有智慧的羞愧；神又揀選了世上軟弱的，為了使那些強壯的羞愧；

那些猶太人感到驚奇，說：「這個人沒學過，怎麼懂得經文呢？」

他們又驚訝又詫異，說：「看，這些說話的不都是加利利人嗎？我們怎麼會聽到我們各自出生地的語言呢？我們當中有帕提亞人、米底亞人、埃攔人；也有住在美索不達米亞、猶太和卡帕多細亞、本都和亞細亞、弗里吉亞和潘菲利亞、埃及和靠近古利奈的利比亞地區的人；還有從羅馬來的旅客，包括猶太人和入猶太教的人；克里特人和阿拉伯人。我們都聽見他們用我們的語言述說神偉大的作為！」眾人又驚訝又困惑，彼此問：「這是什麼意思呢？」

過了一會兒，旁邊站著的人過來對彼得說：「你真的也是與他們一夥的，因為連你的口音也把你暴露了。」

彼得卻站在門外。後來，大祭司認識的那個門徒出來，對看門的說了一聲，就把彼得帶了進去。那看門的女僕問彼得：「你不也是這個人的門徒嗎？」彼得說：「我不是。」

拘捕耶穌的人把他帶到大祭司該亞法那裡。經文士們和長老們已經聚集在那裡了。彼得遠遠地跟著耶穌，一直到大祭司的院子。他進到裡面，與差役們坐在一起，想看看結果如何。

耶穌在加利利湖邊行走，看見兄弟兩個人，就是那叫彼得的西門和他弟弟安得烈，正在湖裡撒網；他們本來是漁夫。耶穌就對他們說：「來跟從我！我將要使你們成為得人的漁夫。」他們立刻捨棄漁網，跟從了耶穌。耶穌從那裡往前走，看見另外兩個兄弟，就是西庇太的兒子雅各和他弟弟約翰，正在船上與他們的父親西庇太一起修補漁網。耶穌就召喚他們，他們立刻捨棄了船，告別他們的父親，跟從了耶穌。

他出去到門口，另有一個女僕看見他，對那裡的人說：「這個人與拿撒勒人耶穌是一夥的。」

耶穌看到母親和他所愛的那門徒站在旁邊，就對母親說：「母親，看哪，你的兒子！」

這不懂律法的民眾是被詛咒的！」

耶穌差派彼得和約翰，說：「你們去為我們預備逾越節的晚餐，好讓我們能吃上。」

耶穌對前來對付他的祭司長們、聖殿守衛長們和長老們說：「你們帶著刀劍和棍棒出來，就像對付強盜那樣嗎？我天天在聖殿裡與你們在一起的時候，你們不向我下手。不過現在是你們的時候了，是黑暗掌權的時候了！」他們抓住耶穌，把他帶走，押到大祭司的家裡。彼得遠遠地跟著。

有一個女僕看見彼得坐在火光中，就注視著他，說：「這個人也與他是一夥的。」彼得卻否認說：「你這個女人哪，我不認識他！」過了一會兒，另一個人看見他，就說：「你也是與他們一夥的！」彼得說：「你這個人哪，我不是！」大約過了一個小時，又有一個人肯定地說：「這個人真的也是與他一夥的，因為他也是加利利人。」彼得說：「你這個人哪，我不知道你在說什麼！」他正說著的時候，雞立時就叫了。
