就在那時候，耶穌說：“父啊，天地的主，我讚美你，因為你把這些事向智慧和聰明的人隱藏起來，卻向嬰孩顯明。

但是神卻揀選了世上愚笨的，使那些有智慧的羞愧。他也揀選了世上軟弱的，使那些剛強的羞愧。

猶太人就希奇，說：“這個人沒有學過，怎會通曉經書呢？”

他們又驚訝、又驚奇，說：“你看，這些說話的，不都是加利利人嗎？我們各人怎麼聽見他們講我們從小所用的本鄉話呢？我們帕提亞人、瑪代人、以攔人和住在美索不達米亞、猶太、加帕多家、本都、亞西亞、弗呂家、旁非利亞、埃及，並靠近古利奈的利比亞一帶地方的人，客居羅馬的猶太人和歸信猶太教的人，克里特人以及阿拉伯人，都聽見他們用我們的語言，講說神的大作為。”眾人還在驚訝迷惘的時候，彼此說：“這是甚麼意思？”

過了一會，站在那裡的人前來對他說：“你的確是他們中間的一個，因為一聽你的口音就認出來了。”

彼得卻站在門外。大祭司所認識的那門徒出來，對看門的婢女說了一聲，就帶了彼得進去。那看門的婢女對彼得說：“你不也是這個人的門徒嗎？”他說：“我不是。”

那些逮捕了耶穌的人，把他押去見大祭司該亞法。那時經學家和長老已經聚集在那裡了。彼得遠遠地跟著耶穌，直到大祭司的官邸。他進到裡面，和差役坐在一起，要看事情怎樣了結。

耶穌在加利利海邊行走的時候，看見兄弟二人，就是名叫彼得的西門和他的弟弟安得烈，正在把網撒到海裡去；他們是漁夫。耶穌就對他們說：“來跟從我，我要使你們作得人的漁夫。”他們立刻撇下網，跟從了他。耶穌又往前走，看見另一對兄弟，就是西庇太的兒子雅各和他的兄弟約翰，正和父親西庇太在船上整理魚網，他就呼召他們。他們立刻離了船，別了父親，跟從了耶穌。

他出到門口，又有一個婢女看見他，就對那裡的人說：“這人是和拿撒勒人耶穌一夥的。”

耶穌看見母親，又看見他所愛的那門徒站在旁邊，就對母親說：“母親（“母親”原文作“婦人”），看！你的兒子。”

至於這群不明白律法的人，他們是可咒詛的。”

耶穌差派彼得和約翰，說：“你們去為我們預備逾越節的晚餐給我們吃。”

耶穌對那些前來捉拿他的祭司長、守殿官和長老說：“你們帶著刀棒出來，把我當作強盜捉拿嗎？我天天跟你們在殿裡，你們不向我下手；但現在是你們的時候了，也是黑暗掌權的時候了。”他們拿住耶穌，押到大祭司家裡，彼得遠遠地跟著。

有一個使女，見他面向火光坐著，就注視他，說：“這人是和他一夥的。”彼得卻否認，說：“你這個女人，我不認得他。”不久，另一個人看見他，就說：“你也是他們中間的一個。”彼得說：“你這個人，我不是。”大約過了一小時，又有一個人肯定地說：“這人真是和他一夥的，因為他也是加利利人。”彼得說：“你這個人，我不知道你說的是甚麼！”他還在說話的時候，雞就叫了。
