就在那时候，耶稣说：“父啊，天地的主，我赞美你，因为你把这些事向智慧和聪明的人隐藏起来，却向婴孩显明。

犹太人就希奇，说：“这个人没有学过，怎会通晓经书呢？”

他们又惊讶、又惊奇，说：“你看，这些说话的，不都是加利利人吗？我们各人怎么听见他们讲我们从小所用的本乡话呢？我们帕提亚人、玛代人、以拦人和住在美索不达米亚、犹太、加帕多家、本都、亚西亚、弗吕家、旁非利亚、埃及，并靠近古利奈的利比亚一带地方的人，客居罗马的犹太人和归信犹太教的人，克里特人以及阿拉伯人，都听见他们用我们的语言，讲说神的大作为。”众人还在惊讶迷惘的时候，彼此说：“这是什么意思？”

过了一会，站在那里的人前来对他说：“你的确是他们中间的一个，因为一听你的口音就认出来了。”

彼得却站在门外。大祭司所认识的那门徒出来，对看门的婢女说了一声，就带了彼得进去。那看门的婢女对彼得说：“你不也是这个人的门徒吗？”他说：“我不是。”

那些逮捕了耶稣的人，把他押去见大祭司该亚法。那时经学家和长老已经聚集在那里了。彼得远远地跟着耶稣，直到大祭司的官邸。他进到里面，和差役坐在一起，要看事情怎样了结。

耶稣在加利利海边行走的时候，看见兄弟二人，就是名叫彼得的西门和他的弟弟安得烈，正在把网撒到海里去；他们是渔夫。耶稣就对他们说：“来跟从我，我要使你们作得人的渔夫。”他们立刻撇下网，跟从了他。耶稣又往前走，看见另一对兄弟，就是西庇太的儿子雅各和他的兄弟约翰，正和父亲西庇太在船上整理鱼网，他就呼召他们。他们立刻离了船，别了父亲，跟从了耶稣。

他出到门口，又有一个婢女看见他，就对那里的人说：“这人是和拿撒勒人耶稣一伙的。”

耶稣看见母亲，又看见他所爱的那门徒站在旁边，就对母亲说：“母亲（“母亲”原文作“妇人”），看！你的儿子。”

至于这群不明白律法的人，他们是可咒诅的。”

耶稣差派彼得和约翰，说：“你们去为我们预备逾越节的晚餐给我们吃。”

耶稣对那些前来捉拿他的祭司长、守殿官和长老说：“你们带着刀棒出来，把我当作强盗捉拿吗？我天天跟你们在殿里，你们不向我下手；但现在是你们的时候了，也是黑暗掌权的时候了。”他们拿住耶稣，押到大祭司家里，彼得远远地跟着。

有一个使女，见他面向火光坐着，就注视他，说：“这人是和他一伙的。”彼得却否认，说：“你这个女人，我不认得他。”不久，另一个人看见他，就说：“你也是他们中间的一个。”彼得说：“你这个人，我不是。”大约过了一小时，又有一个人肯定地说：“这人真是和他一伙的，因为他也是加利利人。”彼得说：“你这个人，我不知道你说的是什么！”他还在说话的时候，鸡就叫了。
