他去見祭司長和聖殿護衛長，商議如何把耶穌出賣給他們，

又煽動百姓、長老和律法教師抓住司提凡，把他押到公會。

保羅發現他們一些是法利賽人，一些是撒都該人，就在公會中高聲說：「弟兄們，我是法利賽人，也是法利賽人的子孫。我因為盼望死人復活，才在這裡受審！」這句話立刻引起法利賽人和撒都該人之間的爭論，公會分成了兩派。因為撒都該人認為沒有復活，也沒有天使和靈，而法利賽人認為這些都有。眾人大聲喧嚷，有幾個法利賽派的律法教師站起來爭辯說：「我們找不出這人有什麼錯處，也許真的有靈或天使跟他說過話。」

同一天，不相信死人會復活的撒都該人也來問耶穌，說：「老師，摩西說，『如果一個人死了，沒有兒女，只留下妻子，他的兄弟就當娶嫂嫂，替哥哥傳宗接代。』

約翰看見很多法利賽人和撒都該人也來受洗，就對他們說：「你們這些毒蛇的後代！誰指示你們逃避那將臨的烈怒呢？

聖殿護衛長和差役再去把使徒抓回來。這次他們不敢動粗，生怕百姓會用石頭打他們。

聖殿護衛長和祭司長聽後，都很困擾，不知道是怎麼回事。

這時，猶大帶著一隊士兵以及祭司長和法利賽人的差役，拿著燈籠、火把和兵器來了。

祭司長和長老卻慫恿百姓要求釋放巴拉巴，處死耶穌。

你們要這樣做，三分之一在安息日值班的祭司和利未人要把守各門，三分之一要把守王宮，三分之一要把守基址門，所有民眾要留在耶和華殿的院子裡。只有祭司和供職的利未人可以進耶和華的殿，因為他們是聖潔的。其他人一律不准進殿。所有的人都要遵守耶和華的吩咐。利未人要手持兵器護衛在王周圍。凡擅自進殿的，一律處死。無論王去哪裡，你們都要緊隨左右。」於是，利未人和所有猶大人遵照耶何耶大祭司的命令而行，各自帶來在安息日值班和休班的屬下，因為耶何耶大祭司沒有讓他們休班。耶何耶大祭司把上帝殿中大衛王的矛槍和大小盾牌交給百夫長。

上帝的道興旺起來，耶路撒冷的門徒大大增多，連許多祭司也皈信了。

到了清晨，所有的祭司長和民間的長老商定要處死耶穌。他們把祂綁起來，押送到總督彼拉多那裡。

那時，祭司長和民間的長老正聚集在大祭司該亞法的府裡，密謀逮捕、殺害耶穌。

祭司長、律法教師和長老也嘲諷說：

門徒這才恍然大悟，知道耶穌不是叫他們當心什麼麵酵，而是要提防法利賽人和撒都該人的教導。

他們派了自己的門徒跟希律黨人一同去問耶穌：「老師，我們知道你誠實無偽，按真理傳上帝的道，你不徇情面，不以貌取人。

大祭司亞那，以及該亞法、約翰、亞歷山大和大祭司的許多親族都在場。

你們要記住我說的話，『奴僕不能大過主人。』他們若迫害我，也必迫害你們；他們若遵行我的話，也必遵行你們的話。
