有一個生來瘸腿的人被人抬來。他們天天把他放在那名叫美門的殿門口，讓他好向進殿的人討飯。

眾人都驚駭，彼此談論說：“這是怎麼回事？他用權柄能力吩咐污靈，污靈竟出來了。”

他們又驚訝、又驚奇，說：“你看，這些說話的，不都是加利利人嗎？

又看見那醫好了的人，和他們一同站著，就沒有話可辯駁。於是吩咐他們到公議會外面去，彼此商議，說：“對這些人我們應該怎麼辦呢？因為有一件人所共知的神蹟，藉著他們行了出來，所有住在耶路撒冷的人都知道，我們也無法否認。

猶太人不信他從前是瞎眼，現在才能看見的，於是把他的父母叫來，問他們：“這是你們所說那生下來就瞎眼的兒子嗎？現在他怎麼又能看見呢？”他的父母回答：“我們知道他是我們的兒子，生下來就瞎眼；現在他是怎樣可以看見的，我們不知道；誰開了他的眼睛，我們也不知道。你們問他吧；他已經長大成人，可以替自己講話了。”

眾人因著所發生的事，都頌讚神，於是公議會為了群眾的緣故，也因為找不到藉口懲罰他們，就恐嚇一番，把他們放了。原來藉著神蹟醫好的那人，有四十多歲了。

眾人還在驚訝迷惘的時候，彼此說：“這是甚麼意思？”

眾人都驚奇神的大能。眾人還在希奇耶穌所作的這一切時，他對門徒說：

耶穌回答：“不是他犯了罪，也不是他的父母犯了罪，而是要在他身上彰顯神的作為。

父愛子，把自己所作的一切指示給他看，還要把比這些更大的事指示給他看，使你們驚奇。
