Three days later he called together the local Jewish leaders. When they had assembled, Paul said to them:“ My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.

嘗聞其言納匝勒人耶穌將毀是地。摩西遺規、亦將更易。』

葆樂答曰：『無論於猶太律法、於聖殿、於凱撒、予悉未嘗有所干犯。』

葆樂曰：「予立於凱撒之法庭、即宜在此受審。予未嘗對猶太人行何不義、是亦汝所明知也。

此固司祭長與諸父老能為予作證者也。予且曾領彼等致眾兄弟之書、往大馬士革、欲將彼處奉此道者、縛解耶路撒冷處刑；

千總乃將葆樂逮繫、加以雙鏈。詢為何人、所犯何事。眾口喧嚷、其答不一、狀至紊亂、不得其情、乃命帶之入營。及階、擁擠益甚、士卒舁葆樂行、眾隨後呼曰：『除之！』將入營、葆樂謂千總曰：『欲有所陳、可乎？』千總曰：『爾諳希臘語耶？然則爾非曩昔為亂、率暴徒四千人、奔赴曠野之埃及人矣。』葆樂曰：『吾籍猶太、生於基利嘉笪爾數、非蕞爾小邑之公民也！請准我向眾訴說。』千總許之、葆樂登階、揮手、譁噪乃止；葆樂遂以希伯來語對眾發言。

方伯向葆樂頷首、命置答。葆樂即曰：『知汝在此國中、聽訟有年、故予安心自為辯護。汝一查究、便知我來耶路撒冷禮主、迄今不過十有二日；彼等未嘗見予在殿中會中或於城中與人爭辯、或聚集群眾。今所控予諸端、又不能向汝提證。但有一事、予可自白：即彼等所稱為異端之道、予確以斯道昭事吾祖之天主、且篤信律法及先知書中所載之一切也。我所望於天主者、無論善人惡人悉將復活、即彼等亦未嘗不懷此盼望也。予之所以發奮自勉、務求心地光明、對主對人、無所愧怍者、正為此耳。

葆樂注視會眾曰：『兄弟！予素以光明純潔之心、昭事天主、以至於今。』大司祭亞拿尼亞乃命左右掌其頰。葆樂語之曰：『願天主毀爾粉堊之墻。汝升座聽訟、應依法審判。今乃違法而令人擊予耶。』左右曰：『汝詬詈天主之大司祭耶？』葆樂曰：『兄弟、予實不知彼乃大司祭也。經云：「民之有司、不可謗也。」』葆樂察知會眾半為撒都責半為法利塞、乃揚聲而言曰：『兄弟！予乃法利塞人、亦法利塞人之子孫也！予今受審、乃以翹企死者復活。』作是語畢、法利塞人與撒杜責人遂起爭論、會眾析而為二；以撒杜責人言無復活、亦無天神與神靈、而法利塞人則言二者皆有；於是大聲噪聒、有法利塞黨之經生數人、起而辯曰：『吾儕未見是人有何罪惡；安知無神靈或天神曾與之語耶？』其時爭論甚烈、千總恐葆樂為眾所裂、乃調兵自眾中攫之出、而攜之入營。是夜、主臨葆樂曰：『勿餒！汝今為予證道於耶路撒冷、來日亦必得為證於羅馬也。』

騎兵既至凱塞里、將公文呈遞總督、令葆樂立於其前。
