When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.

“ Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Then they said to him,“ What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.He said to them,“ Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.”Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.Therefore they called out to the Lord,“ O Lord, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.”

Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea;

Then he said to me,“ Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say,‘ Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’

You were wearied with the length of your way, but you did not say,“ It is hopeless”; you found new life for your strength, and so you were not faint.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.

Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said,‘ It is hopeless, for I have loved foreigners, and after them I will go.’

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness to be felt.”So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was pitch darkness in all the land of Egypt three days.They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days, but all the people of Israel had light where they lived.

But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.

For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea.They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight;they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end.

He sent darkness, and made the land dark; they did not rebel against his words.
