At that time you were without Christ, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world.

“ Immediately after the distress of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

So they said to him,“ What should we do to you so that the sea will calm down for us?” For the sea was getting worse and worse.He answered them,“ Pick me up and throw me into the sea so that it will calm down for you, for I know that I’m to blame for this great storm that is against you.”Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they couldn’t because the sea was raging against them more and more.So they called out to the LORD,“ Please, LORD, don’t let us perish because of this man’s life, and don’t charge us with innocent blood! For you, LORD, have done just as you pleased.”

Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I received a stoning. Three times I was shipwrecked. I have spent a night and a day in the open sea.

Then he said to me,“ Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Look how they say,‘ Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished; we are cut off.’

You became weary on your many journeys, but you did not say,“ It’s hopeless!” You found a renewal of your strength; therefore you did not grow weak.

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.

Keep your feet from going bare and your throat from thirst. But you say,“ It’s hopeless; I love strangers, and I will continue to follow them.”

Then the LORD said to Moses,“ Stretch out your hand toward heaven, and there will be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness that can be felt.”So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness throughout the land of Egypt for three days.One person could not see another, and for three days they did not move from where they were. Yet all the Israelites had light where they lived.

But the LORD threw a great wind onto the sea, and such a great storm arose on the sea that the ship threatened to break apart.

He spoke and raised a stormy wind that stirred up the waves of the sea.Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths, their courage melting away in anguish,they reeled and staggered like a drunkard, and all their skill was useless.

He sent darkness, and it became dark— for did they not defy his commands?
