“ Regarding all the things I have been accused of by the Jews, King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate that I am about to make my defense before you today,because you are especially familiar with all the customs and controversial issues of the Jews. Therefore I ask you to listen to me patiently.

Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled the entire house where they were sitting.And tongues spreading out like a fire appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them.All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem.When this sound occurred, a crowd gathered and was in confusion, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.Completely baffled, they said,“ Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?And how is it that each one of us hears them in our own native language?Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs– we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!”All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another,“ What does this mean?”

and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand, and kneeling down before him, they mocked him:“ Hail, king of the Jews!”They spat on him and took the staff and struck him repeatedly on the head.When they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.As they were going out, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon, whom they forced to carry his cross.They came to a place called Golgotha( which means“ Place of the Skull”)and offered Jesus wine mixed with gall to drink. But after tasting it, he would not drink it.When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes by throwing dice.Then they sat down and kept guard over him there.Above his head they put the charge against him, which read:“ This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.”Then two outlaws were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their headsand saying,“ You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are God’s Son, come down from the cross!”In the same way even the chief priests– together with the experts in the law and elders– were mocking him:“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the king of Israel! If he comes down now from the cross, we will believe in him!He trusts in God– let God, if he wants to, deliver him now because he said,‘ I am God’s Son’!”The robbers who were crucified with him also spoke abusively to him.Now from noon until three, darkness came over all the land.At about three o’clock Jesus shouted with a loud voice,“ Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is,“ My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”When some of the bystanders heard it, they said,“ This man is calling for Elijah.”Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink.But the rest said,“ Leave him alone! Let’s see if Elijah will come to save him.”Then Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.Just then the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks were split apart.And tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had died were raised.( They came out of the tombs after his resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.)Now when the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place, they were extremely terrified and said,“ Truly this one was God’s Son!”

They laid hands on the apostles and put them in a public jail.But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out, and said,“ Go and stand in the temple courts and proclaim to the people all the words of this life.”When they heard this, they entered the temple courts at daybreak and began teaching. Now when the high priest and those who were with him arrived, they summoned the Sanhedrin– that is, the whole high council of the Israelites– and sent to the jail to have the apostles brought before them.But the officers who came for them did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported,“ We found the jail locked securely and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside.”Now when the commander of the temple guard and the chief priests heard this report, they were greatly puzzled concerning it, wondering what this could be.But someone came and reported to them,“ Look! The men you put in prison are standing in the temple courts and teaching the people!”Then the commander of the temple guard went with the officers and brought the apostles without the use of force( for they were afraid of being stoned by the people).When they had brought them, they stood them before the council, and the high priest questioned them,saying,“ We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name. Look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood on us!”But Peter and the apostles replied,“ We must obey God rather than people.The God of our forefathers raised up Jesus, whom you seized and killed by hanging him on a tree.God exalted him to his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.And we are witnesses of these events, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”Now when they heard this, they became furious and wanted to execute them.But a Pharisee whose name was Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was respected by all the people, stood up in the council and ordered the men to be put outside for a short time.Then he said to the council,“ Men of Israel, pay close attention to what you are about to do to these men.For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and nothing came of it.After him Judas the Galilean arose in the days of the census, and incited people to follow him in revolt. He too was killed, and all who followed him were scattered.So in this case I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, because if this plan or this undertaking originates with people, it will come to nothing,but if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them, or you may even be found fighting against God.” He convinced them,and they summoned the apostles and had them beaten. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them.So they left the council rejoicing because they had been considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.And every day both in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus was the Christ.

The sovereign master will give you distress to eat and suffering to drink; but your teachers will no longer be hidden; your eyes will see them.

For it is plain to all who live in Jerusalem that a notable miraculous sign has come about through them, and we cannot deny it.But to keep this matter from spreading any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”And they called them in and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.But Peter and John replied,“ Whether it is right before God to obey you rather than God, you decide,for it is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.”After threatening them further, they released them, for they could not find how to punish them on account of the people, because they were all praising God for what had happened.

Agrippa said to Festus,“ I would also like to hear the man myself.”“ Tomorrow,” he replied,“ you will hear him.”

But they said,“ Not during the feast, so that there won’t be a riot among the people.”
