But the Lord said to him,“ Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel.

They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you.”

For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle( I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry

Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.”

At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them!But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.

Then the brothers immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained there.

and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.

for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people.”

But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him before the tribunal,saying,“ This man is persuading people to worship God contrary to the law.”But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews,“ If it were a matter of wrongdoing or vicious crime, O Jews, I would have reason to accept your complaint.But since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of these things.”And he drove them from the tribunal.

Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one— I am talking like a madman— with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death.Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one.Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea;on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers;

And he said to me,‘ Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”Up to this word they listened to him. Then they raised their voices and said,“ Away with such a fellow from the earth! For he should not be allowed to live.”

And he spoke and disputed against the Hellenists. But they were seeking to kill him.And when the brothers learned this, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.

But Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul,“ Do you wish to go up to Jerusalem and there be tried on these charges before me?”But Paul said,“ I am standing before Caesar’s tribunal, where I ought to be tried. To the Jews I have done no wrong, as you yourself know very well.If then I am a wrongdoer and have committed anything for which I deserve to die, I do not seek to escape death. But if there is nothing to their charges against me, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar.”

Say also:“ Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather and deliver us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise.

for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher,

The wicked watches for the righteous and seeks to put him to death.The Lord will not abandon him to his power or let him be condemned when he is brought to trial.

Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given me by the working of his power.To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,

The soldiers’ plan was to kill the prisoners, lest any should swim away and escape.But the centurion, wishing to save Paul, kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and make for the land,and the rest on planks or on pieces of the ship. And so it was that all were brought safely to land.

And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him away from among them by force and bring him into the barracks.The following night the Lord stood by him and said,“ Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.”When it was day, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.There were more than forty who made this conspiracy.They went to the chief priests and elders and said,“ We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food till we have killed Paul.Now therefore you, along with the council, give notice to the tribune to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case more exactly. And we are ready to kill him before he comes near.”Now the son of Paul’s sister heard of their ambush, so he went and entered the barracks and told Paul.Paul called one of the centurions and said,“ Take this young man to the tribune, for he has something to tell him.”So he took him and brought him to the tribune and said,“ Paul the prisoner called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, as he has something to say to you.”The tribune took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately,“ What is it that you have to tell me?”And he said,“ The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more closely about him.But do not be persuaded by them, for more than forty of their men are lying in ambush for him, who have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they have killed him. And now they are ready, waiting for your consent.”So the tribune dismissed the young man, charging him,“ Tell no one that you have informed me of these things.”Then he called two of the centurions and said,“ Get ready two hundred soldiers, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go as far as Caesarea at the third hour of the night.Also provide mounts for Paul to ride and bring him safely to Felix the governor.”

When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s companions in travel.But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him.And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater.Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together.Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd.But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said,“ Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky?Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash.For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess.If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.”And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.

crying out,“ Men of Israel, help! This is the man who is teaching everyone everywhere against the people and the law and this place. Moreover, he even brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place.”For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.Then all the city was stirred up, and the people ran together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple, and at once the gates were shut.And as they were seeking to kill him, word came to the tribune of the cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion.He at once took soldiers and centurions and ran down to them. And when they saw the tribune and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.Then the tribune came up and arrested him and ordered him to be bound with two chains. He inquired who he was and what he had done.Some in the crowd were shouting one thing, some another. And as he could not learn the facts because of the uproar, he ordered him to be brought into the barracks.And when he came to the steps, he was actually carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd,for the mob of the people followed, crying out,“ Away with him!”

asking as a favor against Paul that he summon him to Jerusalem— because they were planning an ambush to kill him on the way.

So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city.

my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra— which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me.

Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.”

But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.

When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to mistreat them and to stone them,they learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country,

The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue.

When many days had passed, the Jews plotted to kill him,but their plot became known to Saul. They were watching the gates day and night in order to kill him,but his disciples took him by night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a basket.

For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself.Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.
