Then Paul made his defense:“ I have done nothing wrong against the Jewish law or against the temple or against Caesar.”

Then Paul spoke up for himself. He said,“ I’ve done nothing wrong against the law of the Jews or against the temple. I’ve done nothing wrong against Caesar.”

Paul argued in his defense,“ Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I committed any offense.”

Paul denied the charges.“ I am not guilty of any crime against the Jewish laws or the Temple or the Roman government,” he said.

They didn’t find me arguing with anyone or causing a disturbance among the crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues or anywhere in the city.

After three days he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them,“ Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

Then they said to him,“ We haven’t received any letters about you from Judea. None of the brothers has come and reported or spoken anything evil about you.

Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin and said,“ Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience to this day.”

Paul replied,“ I am standing at Caesar’s tribunal, where I ought to be tried. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as even you yourself know very well.

Indeed, this is our boast: The testimony of our conscience is that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, with godly sincerity and purity, not by human wisdom but by God’s grace.

After many years, I came to bring charitable gifts and offerings to my people.While I was doing this, some Jews from Asia found me ritually purified in the temple, without a crowd and without any uproar.It is they who ought to be here before you to bring charges, if they have anything against me.Or let these men here state what wrongdoing they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin,other than this one statement I shouted while standing among them,‘ Today I am on trial before you concerning the resurrection of the dead.’”

For I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing that they should put me in the dungeon.”

They also presented false witnesses who said,“ This man never stops speaking against this holy place and the law.For we heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.”

He even tried to desecrate the temple, and so we apprehended him. By examining him yourself you will be able to discern the truth about these charges we are bringing against him.”

Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah,“ How have I sinned against you or your servants or these people that you have put me in prison?

My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths; and they haven’t harmed me, for I was found innocent before him. And also before you, Your Majesty, I have not done harm.”
