I pointed out to them that Roman law does not convict people without a trial. They must be given an opportunity to confront their accusers and defend themselves.

So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked,“ What is your charge against this man?”“ We wouldn’t have handed him over to you if he weren’t a criminal!” they retorted.

But in my opinion he has done nothing deserving death. However, since he appealed his case to the emperor, I have decided to send him to Rome.

But just as Paul started to make his defense, Gallio turned to Paul’s accusers and said,“ Listen, you Jews, if this were a case involving some wrongdoing or a serious crime, I would have a reason to accept your case.

Look, my father, at what I have in my hand. It is a piece of the hem of your robe! I cut it off, but I didn’t kill you. This proves that I am not trying to harm you and that I have not sinned against you, even though you have been hunting for me to kill me.“ May the Lord judge between us. Perhaps the Lord will punish you for what you are trying to do to me, but I will never harm you.

But the accusations made against him weren’t any of the crimes I expected.Instead, it was something about their religion and a dead man named Jesus, who Paul insists is alive.

O Lord my God, if I have done wrong or am guilty of injustice,if I have betrayed a friend or plundered my enemy without cause,then let my enemies capture me. Let them trample me into the ground and drag my honor in the dust. Interlude

But when I was informed of a plot to kill him, I immediately sent him on to you. I have told his accusers to bring their charges before you.”
