I answered them that it is not the Roman custom to give someone up before the accused faces the accusers and has an opportunity for a defense against the charges.

So Pilate came out to them and said,“ What charge do you bring against this man?”They answered him,“ If this man weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”

I found that he had not done anything deserving of death, but when he himself appealed to the Emperor, I decided to send him.

As Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews,“ If it were a matter of wrongdoing or of a serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to put up with you Jews.

Look, my father! Look at the corner of your robe in my hand, for I cut it off, but I didn’t kill you. Recognize that I’ve committed no crime or rebellion. I haven’t sinned against you even though you are hunting me down to take my life.“ May the LORD judge between me and you, and may the LORD take vengeance on you for me, but my hand will never be against you.

The accusers stood up but brought no charge against him of the evils I was expecting.Instead they had some disagreements with him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus, a dead man Paul claimed to be alive.

LORD my God, if I have done this, if there is injustice on my hands,if I have done harm to one at peace with me or have plundered my adversary without cause,may an enemy pursue and overtake me; may he trample me to the ground and leave my honor in the dust. Selah

When I was informed that there was a plot against the man, I sent him to you right away. I also ordered his accusers to state their case against him in your presence.
