我答覆他們說，被告還沒有和原告當面對證，又沒有機會為所控的罪申辯，就被送給對方，羅馬人沒有這個規例。

於是彼拉多走到外面見他們，說：“你們控告這個人甚麼呢？”他們回答：“如果這個人沒有作惡，我們就不會把他交給你。”

我查明他沒有犯甚麼該死的罪，但是他自己既然要向皇上上訴，我就決定把他解去。

保羅剛要開口，迦流就對猶太人說：“猶太人啊，如果有犯法或邪惡的罪行，我當然要耐心聽你們；

我父啊，請看，你外袍的衣邊在我手中。我割下了你外袍的衣邊，卻沒有殺你。你從此可以知道，也可以看出我手中沒有邪惡，也沒有過犯。我雖然沒有得罪你，你卻要獵取我的性命。願耶和華在你我之間判斷是非；願耶和華在你身上為我伸冤。我的手卻不敢傷害你。

原告都站在那裡，他們所控訴他的，並不是我所意料的惡事。他們與他爭辯的，只是他們的宗教問題；還論到一位已經死了的耶穌，保羅卻說他是活著的。

耶和華我的神啊！如果我作了這事，如果我手中有罪孽，如果我以惡回報那與我為友的人，或是無故掠奪與我為敵的人，就任憑仇敵追趕我，直到追上，把我的性命踐踏在地上，使我的光榮歸於塵土。（細拉）

後來我接到密報，得知害他的陰謀，就立刻把他送到你那裡去，並且吩咐原告到你面前來控告他。”

你親自審問之後，就必清楚知道我們告他的一切事了。”
