When it was day, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.There were more than forty who made this conspiracy.They went to the chief priests and elders and said,“ We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food till we have killed Paul.Now therefore you, along with the council, give notice to the tribune to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case more exactly. And we are ready to kill him before he comes near.”

When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer.The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,and said to them,“ You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him.Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him.I will therefore punish and release him.”

And he vowed to her,“ Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”And she went out and said to her mother,“ For what should I ask?” And she said,“ The head of John the Baptist.”And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying,“ I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me.

And why not do evil that good may come?— as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.

Then the officials said to the king,“ Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.”

Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the throng of evildoers,who whet their tongues like swords, who aim bitter words like arrows,shooting from ambush at the blameless, shooting at him suddenly and without fear.They hold fast to their evil purpose; they talk of laying snares secretly, thinking,“ Who can see them?”They search out injustice, saying,“ We have accomplished a diligent search.” For the inward mind and heart of a man are deep.

Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying,“ Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah, which is south of Jeshimon?Now come down, O king, according to all your heart’s desire to come down, and our part shall be to surrender him into the king’s hand.”And Saul said,“ May you be blessed by the Lord, for you have had compassion on me.

but their plot became known to Saul. They were watching the gates day and night in order to kill him,

“ I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth.And I did so in Jerusalem. I not only locked up many of the saints in prison after receiving authority from the chief priests, but when they were put to death I cast my vote against them.And I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them blaspheme, and in raging fury against them I persecuted them even to foreign cities.
