Bringing them before the chief magistrates, they said,“ These men are seriously disturbing our city. They are Jewsand are promoting customs that are not legal for us as Romans to adopt or practice.”

They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”

( He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)

Then he went and settled in a town called Nazareth to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.

Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying,“ Amos has conspired against you right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words,

The officials then said to the king,“ This man ought to die, because he is weakening the morale of the warriors who remain in this city and of all the people by speaking to them in this way. This man is not pursuing the welfare of this people, but their harm.”

Sanballat sent me this same message a fifth time by his aide, who had an open letter in his hand.In it was written: It is reported among the nations— and Geshem agrees— that you and the Jews plan to rebel. This is the reason you are building the wall. According to these reports, you are to become their kingand have even set up the prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim on your behalf,“ There is a king in Judah.” These rumors will be heard by the king. So come, let’s confer together.Then I replied to him,“ There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind.”

Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came from you have returned to us at Jerusalem. They are rebuilding that rebellious and evil city, finishing its walls, and repairing its foundations.Let it now be known to the king that if that city is rebuilt and its walls are finished, they will not pay tribute, duty, or land tax, and the royal revenue will suffer.Since we have taken an oath of loyalty to the king, and it is not right for us to witness his dishonor, we have sent to inform the kingthat a search should be made in your predecessors’ record books. In these record books you will discover and verify that the city is a rebellious city, harmful to kings and provinces. There have been revolts in it since ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed.We advise the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are finished, you will not have any possession west of the Euphrates.The king sent a reply to his chief deputy Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their colleagues living in Samaria and elsewhere in the region west of the Euphrates River: Greetings.The letter you sent us has been translated and read in my presence.I issued a decree and a search was conducted. It was discovered that this city has had uprisings against kings since ancient times, and there have been rebellions and revolts in it.

For it brings favor if, because of a consciousness of God, someone endures grief from suffering unjustly.

when we are slandered, we respond graciously. Even now, we are like the scum of the earth, like everyone’s garbage.

“ You are blessed when they insult you and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of me.Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
