When they tied Paul down to lash him, Paul said to the officer standing there,“ Is it legal for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been tried?”

A commander was standing there as they stretched Paul out to be whipped. Paul said to him,“ Does the law allow you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?”

But when they had stretched him out for the whips, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by,“ Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?”

As they stretched him out for the lash, Paul said to the centurion standing by,“ Is it legal for you to scourge a man who is a Roman citizen and is uncondemned?”

But when they stretched him out with straps, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by,“ Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman and uncondemned?”

And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by,“ Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?”

And when they had tied him up with the thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

As they stretched him out for the lash, Paul said to the centurion standing by,“ Is it legal for you to scourge a man who is a Roman citizen and is uncondemned?”

When they had stretched him out for the lash, Paul said to the centurion standing nearby,“ Is it legal for you to lash a man who is a Roman citizen without a proper trial?”

When they had tied him up with thongs, Paul asked the centurion who stood by,“ Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?”

But Paul replied,“ They have publicly beaten us without a trial and put us in prison— and we are Roman citizens. So now they want us to leave secretly? Certainly not! Let them come themselves to release us!”

I pointed out to them that Roman law does not convict people without a trial. They must be given an opportunity to confront their accusers and defend themselves.

Paul called for one of the Roman officers and said,“ Take this young man to the commander. He has something important to tell him.”

So the commander went over and asked Paul,“ Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?”“ Yes, I certainly am,” Paul replied.“ I am, too,” the commander muttered,“ and it cost me plenty!” Paul answered,“ But I am a citizen by birth!”

But the commanding officer wanted to spare Paul, so he didn’t let them carry out their plan. Then he ordered all who could swim to jump overboard first and make for land.

When the time came, we set sail for Italy. Paul and several other prisoners were placed in the custody of a Roman officer named Julius, a captain of the Imperial Regiment.

The next day when we docked at Sidon, Julius was very kind to Paul and let him go ashore to visit with friends so they could provide for his needs.

In Caesarea there lived a Roman army officer named Cornelius, who was a captain of the Italian Regiment.

But the officer said,“ Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.

The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said,“ This man truly was the Son of God!”
