他們正想要殺他，有人報信給營裏的千夫長，說耶路撒冷全城都亂了。千夫長立刻帶着士兵和幾個百夫長，跑下去到他們那裏。他們見了千夫長和士兵，就停下來不打保羅。

於是，彼拉多命令把耶穌帶去鞭打了。

這個人被猶太人拿住，快被殺害時，我得知他是羅馬人，就帶士兵下去，把他救了出來。

他們剛用皮條把他捆上的時候，保羅對站在旁邊的百夫長說：「一個羅馬人，又未被定罪，你們就鞭打他是合法的嗎？」百夫長聽見這話，就去見千夫長，報告說：「你要怎麼辦呢？這個人是羅馬人。」千夫長就來問保羅：「你告訴我，你是羅馬人嗎？」保羅說：「是。」千夫長回答：「我用了許多銀子才得到羅馬公民的身份。」保羅說：「我生來就是。」於是那些要拷問保羅的人立刻離開他走了。千夫長一知道他是羅馬人，又因為曾捆綁了他，也害怕起來。

羣眾就一齊起來攻擊他們。官長們吩咐撕開他們的衣裳，用棍子打；打了許多棍，就把他們下在監裏，囑咐獄警嚴緊看守。
